PW # 3 Spooky weekend

Spookie weekend

Halloween is getting close and this i weekend i had a lot of fun, to start with the halloween vibes me and my friends love horror movies and to prepare for the spookie season we watched horror movies and had some ice cream on saturday which was a lot of fun, we got scared but at the end we laughed and enjoyed it .

On sunday we also had a lot of fun , the school organized a hide and seek around the school which was a lot of fun , my friends and me got to hide in different places all around school, at the end they found us but it was very fun.

To finish our saturday we all baked cookies, they were great, they were hard to make but the effort was all worth it. The cookies were very good and it was great making them to finish our weekend.

Lets not forget the school dance on friday which was a lot of fun, we got to wear our costumes and dance with our friends, this also made the weekend great.

At the end i enjoyed my spookie weekend with a lot of fun, preparing for halloween and having a great time with my friends.

PW#3: Waterpolo Tournament

Just this passed weekend, I had the great opportunity to directly participate in a Championship which involved international players from 12 – 16 +, and lasted from Friday to Sunday (Oct. 27-29th).

On the first day, I had to get there at 2:00pm to be in time for the event. However, the mixed plans of my parents became evident and I ended up going to the pool a whopping 2 hours earlier; at 12:00pm.

On the first day my age group played 2 games, whose intervals were pretty thrown about. The first game was from 2:50 to 3:30, while the second game was at 5:20, to 6. Sadly, I was picked up half an hour later meaning that I spent a whopping 7 hours at an event on the first day. The two games were a large success, my team won and it was really fascinating to see how good we really were.

On the second day, we also had 2 games, lasting from 10:20 am and 11 am to 4:10 pm – 5:50pm. On the second day I decided not to go to the evening game since it was a very big interval and plus I would have better things to work on. The game ended up a tie, causing me to be nervous for the upcoming round for my teammates.

On the third and final day things took a drastical turn. The game began at 7:50 and ended at 8:40, which we unfortunately lost due to the other team playing in a very cheatful manner (Pulling underwater by swimsuits). This meant that my team of this age group was disqualified from the competition, meaning that we were free to leave and they gave us luck for next time.

IRJE#2: The Kite Runner

The Kite Runner, is a book with a very deep meaning behind it. The stories told in this book depict mid Afghan war ad people throughout Afghanistan. The main Character (Amir) and his best friend (Hassan) go to a festival every winter to launch kites. However, this was no ordinary event, as during the mass chaos and hundreds of kites flying, many tangle or get taken down. The goal of the game is to be the last one “standing”.

“In the winter of 1975, I saw Hassan run a kite for the last time. Usually, each neighbourhood held it’s own competition. But that year the competition was going to be held in my neighbourhood.. You could hardly go anywhere without hearing talk of the upcoming tournament.”

This quote symbolises that in areas like Afghanistan, where the industrialization and evolution of tech has not occurred, people get entertained by such a tiny thing, for us, the ones who revolutionised. This leads me to believe that we should all be grateful for what we have and not to disrespect those who are in a tough situation today (Israel, Ukraine, Afghanistan, parts of Africa, North Korea, and other countries which are con-full)

PW#3: Sick games

While I was away last week I was sick with a stomach bug and just liked to sit around and do nothing, watch some TV, sit on my phone and sleep, but there was one other thing I could do, play games. I played one of my almost forgotten favorite games, Uncharted 4: A Thieves End.

It’s all about finding treasures, solving puzzles to find the treasure and fight people (fist or gun) to find the treasure. I had such a fun time and to be honest, I probably played it a bit too much. I started a new game on the hardest difficulty to get an achievement… probably shouldn’t have done but I like challenges. At almost every encounter with enemies, I died.

There was one part further into the story I was worried about though, when I’m in a old pirate (Captain Avery) mansion searching for a friend that’s being held captive, I get ambushed. On my first playthrough on the 3rd hardest difficulty, doing this encounter with a bunch of the enemy’s was already hard enough, but when I did this on the hardest difficulty… it was painful. At the start of the fight I had to get rid of a minigun brute, two snipers, an armored gunman and a few normal gunmen just in one hallway. I died at least around 63 times trying to figure out the perfect pattern, and while dying this much, I got a little angry, I mean, who wouldn’t get mad?

After dying countless times I went and took a break planning out my every move, where to go, how to do it and what to grab because ammo for guns were limited and after a while of thinking I went back. probably around 26 deaths later I finally beat the encounter, hit every headshot, collected all one-shot sniper ammo and planned out where to go and after encountering four juggernauts and more gunmen I finally beat it. All of this probably took me around 2-3 hours, it was tiring, but it felt good when I finished.

PW#3

I have wanted to dye my hair blue for a long time (around three months) and I was thinking about doing it yesterday at 2:30pm, so I started pitting the bleach on (after finishing putting it on (I finished the whole bottle and it took me about two or three hours to putt it on and take it off) then I went to save on foods for more bleach because it wasn´t enough and I bought two more bottles then I use them both until they were empty and sill wasn´t enough but at that time I couldn´t go out anymore, it was around ten or eleven o´clock and supposedly after six I can´t go out unless it´s the weekend but  it was Sunday and the next day I have classes  and if I continued, the smell wasn´t even going away and it could be dangerous for me and my roommate, so I couldn´t on the color anymore and the next day I had to go to school with beached hair (it looked horrible) and today after school I decided to put on the color, and it looked very bad, it only turned darker, it looks very ugly, on Wednesday or in the weekend I will go to a hair salon to fix it.

PW #3 – My growing obsession with physical music

Hello everyone, and welcome to my PW#3, which is inevitably going to be a long-winded dump of one of my interests, the interest in question being physical media (mainly music).

It’s no secret I love music: I’m constantly listening to a new album, whether it be through a turntable, CD player, tape deck, computer, or phone. This obsession started when I was but a child, and my dad used to show me his record collection from when he was a child. Rush, Yes, and Pink Floyd, among many other classic prog rock bands, would be echoing through the halls of our home.

Fast forward to 5 years ago, when I was 8. My dad had just got a new turntable. I was quite interested in this foreign thing – it just seemed really strange to me, how a big plastic disc with grooves on it could make sounds using a needle. This truly jumpstarted my interest in the subject.

When I was 11 I decided to buy myself a record and use the turntable myself – I still remember it like it was yesterday. The record was Fortitude by Gojira – not the greatest album, but oh well. In the next year I bought a few more records, listening to them tons. In this time I also grew some interest in CDs as I found an old Discman at a garage sale.

I continued on, buying CDs and vinyl any chance I got, when I grew interested in another format: cassette tapes. I had an old Walkman I got from my dad, so I decided to buy a couple cassettes. The Walkman sounded terrible, and ended up eating 3 of the 4 cassettes I had at the time, but it was a good jumping off point for me.

Just a few months ago, my grandparents visited and brought me something akin to a gold bar, at least for me: a shiny, mint-condition, name-brand tape deck from the 1990s. It sounded great hooked up to a pair of nice speakers, and what’s more, it didn’t eat my tapes! It was truly a glorious moment! Still, to this day, my idea of fun is going to record stores, and listening to music. Some people love video games, some love cooking, some love art, but me, I love physical music.

Master and Man

In this short story, a landowner named Vasili Andreyevich Brekhunov takes one of his farmers, Nikita, on a short sleigh ride. They were going to visit another landowner so Vasili Andreyevich could buy a piece of forest. He is impatient and wants to get there faster before other competitors get there.

The two find themselves in the middle of a snowstorm, but the master greedily wants to move on. Because of the snow, they found themselves lost. They finally found themselves in a small town and stopped to rest. Vasily Andreyevitch decided that they must retreat.

The men were lost and the horses were tired, so they decided to sleep outside and find their way in the morning. Nikita was not dressed as warmly as Vasily Andreyevich and soon found herself dying of hypothermia.

Vasily Andreyevich decided to leave Nikita to her own devices and set off on his horse. He wandered in circles in the snow, eventually falling off his horse and finding himself back with Nikita and the sled. The Master received a spiritual/moral revelation, and Tolstoy repeated one of his famous themes: that the only true happiness in life is to live for others.

Then the master lay on top of the farmer to keep him warm on the cold night. In the morning, the farmers dug out their sledges, only half a mile from the town. They found Vasily Andreevich and the horse dead, but Nikita alive.

PW #3 Obsession in Movies

Nothing can explain my enthrallment with obsession and how the mind works. This weekend I re-watched Fight Club, one of my favorite films let alone one of the greatest of all time. I love movies that tackle what obsession is, American Psycho, Black Swan, and Sound of Metal are all films I would also highly recommend to any viewer. Obsession, unlike love, is secretly and ridiculously hard to express on screen. The explanation being, because of how closely it is related to love/madness. Countless find most films that try to portray their leading role as being ludicrously obsessed, get portrayed as being crazy or in love instead, which is much different from being obsessed. Thus, comes the predicament of there being much fewer films on obsession than on any other subject. This greatly saddens me as even the highly acclaimed films I have recommended beforehand, unfortunately, feature some sort or another of this problem as well. I have yet to find any film that can satisfy my wants of an enthusiastic yet realistic sight of modern-day obsession, however, I will keep pursuing this marvelous task.

Master and Man PR

One of the things the book master and man makes me think about is how sometimes someone in a lower position can be smarter than someone in a higher position. This is significant because it means that the social hierarchy can be wrong and contributes greatly to many other things. Another thing the book Master and Man makes me think about is what makes a servant a servant and what makes a master a master and why.

PW#3 Last weekend

Last weekend my younger cousin Nyla came to visit me and my family with her parents.  She arrived Friday afternoon as it was a pro-d day and I was at a friends when she arrived.  Later in the afternoon I came home and my parents and her parents went out for dinner while leaving me in charge. For dinner we ordered pizza and had root beer to drink. On the second day I spent most of the day doing homework before going out to babysit.  Before I left my mom helped Nyla and I make many bottles of  homemade lash serum.  When I finished baby sitting around 9pm, my family came to pick me up. We all went to 2 haunted houses. The first one we went to, people in costumes were following us around and the decorations were extremely scary. The second house we went to was a little less scary but it was still fun.

IRJE #2 Bruno Rodriguez

At the beggining of part two of the book “Someone You Know” by Catherine Fogarty, the frighting story of Wayne Ford takes place in Toronto. Wayne had always had problems with his mother, but one time, he did what nobody would even think doing it: he killed his mother. No one knew this until her dead body came out of a lake and started investigated the case. Wayne was at prison at the time because of other things he did. He didn’t know about the investigation and had to go to the trial anyways.

When they walked into the Fords’ kitchen, Ronald said he saw a lifeless form underneath a bloodied beadsheet. Wayne pulled the sheet back to reveal his mother’s body. Ronald told the jury that the woman had a grey patterened dress on, but he couldn’t see the face because there was a blue plastic bag covering her head. The sight of the body made him sick and he threw up in the kitchen sink.

Ronald was a guy that Wayne threatened to kill if he said anything about the murder, or if he didn’t help him hide the body. Since Wayne was already in prison, he confessed with no fear anymore. This story really made me think about of how some people seem to not have any guilt or feelings because they do actions that would normally make feel them guilt, sadness, fear, etc.

IRJE #2 Harry Potter

In the book of Harry Potter by J.K Rowling in the page 30  harry potter lived with his aunt and uncle because his parents had passed away, Harry was very unhappy with the Dudleys, they treated him very badly and didn’t love him. Harry didn’t want that home but one day he received a letter that changed everything.

HOGWARTS SCHOOL

Here in this letter of acceptance to Hogwarts we can see how Mr. Dudley did not want those letters for Harry but this letter is showing and beginning Harry’s new, happy stage and many challenges. He is going to suffer a lot but he is going to start living a live full of magic and new adventures that were never unimaginable, this book is very interesting and I will keep reading it to see what happens.

IRJE #2 Atomic Habits

Atomic Habits, I am enjoying it very much, this book teaches you very important things that you can do to improve your life day by day, leaving aside the whims, it teaches you several things such as how to make small habits so involved in your life that they make you change from your way of thinking to the way you see the world.

“All big things come from small beginnings”. (p.22)

This word is very simple but very profound at the same time this word tells you for me no matter the circumstances no matter how difficult it is, always get up and give your best always.

(IRJE#2) Too Late

His classmate from Spanish class works for her mate and he is trying to help her to get out of the house in which they run parties every night but the consequence to that could be even worse.

Because she’s right. I can’t save her. As much as I want to, we’re both stuck. I can’t ruin something that is so much bigger than just the two of us. I can’t sacrifice what it is I’m here to do for the sake of helping her to leave (P. 85)

I think this is a good quote because sometimes, as much as you want to do something, you con’t. You know doing it would help you, it will make you better, you will be happier, you really want to do it; but your destiny is to not do it. Sometimes it is hard to accept it and move on from the fact that you are not going to do it.

PW #2

I’m going to tell you about the time I went skiing for the first time. I was about 11 years old, my family and some friends went to a small town near Los Angeles called Big Bear, the town was very nice, we stayed in a very nice house that we rented, the second day we went skiing and I loved it, we stayed in Big Bear for a week and then we returned to Los Angeles to go to Disney and Universal, that trip was very cool and I would like to do it again one day.

PW #3: A Skier’s Dilemma

Do you remember cozy, fun, and short-lived winters we used to have? If you have lived in Victoria for most of your life, probably. Winters only used to last just a few days, and for some reason they always seemed to follow a pattern; first day it would get cold and snow just a little bit, almost like a teaser to winter. The next day would be much colder, and all the snow would arrive at once; about 1-2 feet. The third day it would substantially warm, and the snow would start to melt, and the fourth day it would rain. I am still confused as to why this pattern is so persistent. Another thing I notice during our winters is the fact that I have had snow on my birthday for the last 6 years in a row. For instance my birthday is on February 28th. I don’t know how it always happens, and the weather patterns continue to shock me every year. Who knows? Maybe it’ll happen again come the new year. The current weather is also abnormal for this time of year. 7 degrees is much cooler than a typical October, especially considering that it was 24 degrees a couple of weeks ago. There is currently snow everywhere in Canada with the exclusion of Victoria, Haida Gwaii, and the Northern Coast. If you have ever been to any other parts of British Columbia from November –  March, you would come across a sudden realization whilst thinking to yourself in the head: “Wow! The roads are terrible!” Quite a phenomenon when you cross the lower parts of the Coast Mountains and the weather goes from 4 degrees to -14 in 100km. In a way, Vancouver Island dwellers are lucky.

In the literal rest of the province, you are forced to stay put from December – February. Reason being, the roads are too unpredictable. I can say from experience, driving in -30 and snow on a one lane highway is not ideal. Say you’re driving from Vancouver to Smithers in one day. On paper, it’s a 13 hour drive; achievable in a day if you get an early start. The minute that the roads are snowed in, a 13 hour drive turns to 25 hours. In other words, not achievable, and unsafe. Markings are non-existent. This is when we play our favourite game; pretend that the lane is there and hope you aren’t slammed by a semi from the opposing side. Wow, what fun. For a skier like me, you face a dilemma in the winter; either have great road conditions and bad skiing, or have terrible roads and heavenly skiing. One might say, why not fly? Of course it’s much quicker and safer but you then face a dilemma of a dilemma; when your checked bag with your ski gear doesn’t show up, what happens to the trip? You could rent, but it would easily cost thousands for a multiple day trip with a few people. Along with this, what if you arrive at the airport and the snow bus is cancelled? These are just some of the issues that can arise when you plan interior ski trips. You then come up with a solution; Mount Washington. 9 times out of 10, the roads are in pristine condition, making it easy to get up and down the mountain. As mentioned earlier, wouldn’t good roads mean bad skiing? Surprisingly no, and skiing is usually decent. It is something that makes Mount Washington unique from other ski hills.

IRJE#2

In the book: Do It Anyway Overcome your perceived physical and mental limits, there were 2 quotes that really struck me, when your an athlete. This happens to a lot of us athletes out there because of teamates and coaches the 2 quotes were:

“‘That’s fine.

They don’t need me and I don’t need them.

I quit.”’ (p.19)

”’You have the talent

and the skill to make it to the next level,

but you’re not mature enough.”’ (p.20)

I chose both of those quotes, because I really like sports. However, they both have bigger meanings, there could have been a lot of reasons why he quit, but the reason he quit was because he was benched. He didn’t want to put the work in to start, so he decided to quit, which is sad in my eyes. For the second quote, the man was talking about how a lot of coaches said that, it doesn’t just come down to talent, it comes down to the amount of work you put in, how you hold yourself accountable, and take responsability for your actions, he didn’t. Therefore that is one of the biggest regrets of his career. You would probably surprised with how many athletes are immature.

PW#3: Weather

If you go to Canada in the winter, you will notice snow everywhere, that is, if you go to any place except Victoria. In Victoria, it will snow 3 feet one day, and the next day is will be 30 degrees celsius and the snow will have melted overnight. Normal weather is extremely rare in Victoria. And the rain is a whole different story. You can have a flood because of how much rain there is, and the next day of course, it will all have evaporated. When I was 12, I decided it was a good idea to go outside in the snow. that day, there was around 3 inches of snow, so I decided to shovel the sidewalk. after that, I went to bed, and when I woke up there was probably 2-3 feet of snow. To sum it up, my hard work was all lost the next day. Since it snowed so much, I decided to make the most of it. after I went to bed that night, the snow had gotten shorter, and the day after, it was gone. and it never snowed again since. This is common in Victoria, the weather changes a lot here. Especially the temperature.

IRJE#2 – The Subtle Knife

In The Subtle Knife by Philip Pullman, Lyra and Will both find themselves in this new world and that is where they meet for the first time. They are both from Oxford but from different times it seems. Will is from the modern day Oxford whilst Lyra is from an old Oxford. They manage to get back into Wills’ Oxford by finding a peculiar tear in the air. When they peered through, they could see the rush hour traffic of Oxford. Lyra had never seen so many cars and once they were through they both had their different missions. Lyra is trying to find out more about Dust and Will is trying to find more information about his missing father. Lyra and Will end up working together to and find that both their mysteries are connected.

“Just sort of relax your mind and say yes, it does hurt, I know. Don’t try and shut it out.” – Dr. Malone (to Lyra) (p.92)

I like this quote because I can relate. It can be hard to relax your mind when you have so many thoughts rushing through all the time. On the second sentance when Dr. Malone tells Lyra “Don’t try and shut it out.”, I think she is telling her to not ignore it when your brain is trying to relax and focus. You need to embrace it. Dr. Malone is telling her this when Lyra is trying to focus when they are trying to figure about about Dust and how the mysterious particles are connected to consciousness. Lyra needs to focus because she is connected to wires that will help her draw an image in her mind so ask questions and the answers are in drawings.

My childhood

The first time you open your eyes

You think everything is bright

You seem surprised

By everything you looking at

Color shapes people and shame

You used to like pink and always seeing green

Your hobby was looking at the stars

Thinking about you living on mars

Flying high and touching the sky

Being a person kind

And always seeing good stuff behind

IRJE 2 Freak the Mighty

I am really liking this book so far and I have enjoyed reading this book and the connection between Max and Kevin and the way they complement each other with what they have makes me enjoy this book , they help each other in everything and that makes them Freak the mighty, being opposites for them is great and they get along very good no matter what they look like or how they are not alike.

Finally, Mrs. Addison has to come out and pull me away until the ambulance leaves with just the light going and not the siren.

“You’ve had quite a day, haven’t you?” she says, walking me back into the school.

“It’s not me who had quite a day,” I say.

“Kevin is the one. All he did was try and eat his lunch.”

Mrs. Addison gives me this look, and then she goes, “You’re going to be okay, Maxwell Kane. I am sure of it now.

I choose this quote since when they start to be more friends, they help each other in everything, and they are always together supporting each other in everything they can and even if they have a bad day they are there for each other and their friendship is very honest and valuable which may be hard to find sometimes, their friendship is very valuable and the way they connect being opposites makes me enjoy this book.

IRJE#2: The Kite Runner

I am reading “The Kite Runner” by Khaled Hosseini. the book is very well written, and so far it is one of my favourite books. The book is about the friendship between Amir and Hassan, Amir being the main character of the story.

I closed my eyes and loosened my grip on the string. It sliced my fingers again as the wind dragged it. And then… I didn’t need to hear the crowd’s roar to know. I didn’t need to see either. Hassan was screaming and his arm was wrapped around my neck. “Bravo! Bravo, Amir agha!” I opened my eyes, saw the blue kite spinning wildly like a tire come loose from a speeding car.

I chose this quote because it shows how any amount of hard work pays off, and how motivation is one of the strongest ways to win something. Amir had so much motivation he was willing to injure himself, even while the string was “slicing his fingers”, he still pushed on, which shows his extraordinary level of motivation. Additionally, this quote shows the friendship between Hassan and Amir, as Hassan was celebrating as if he won, even though it was his friend. A celebration this intense really goes to show how good of a friend Hassan is to Amir, at the point that Hassan is almost like a brother to Amir.

IRJE #2 Lying in the Breeze

“Lying in the Breeze” is about a criminal and a detective who fall in love over time yet neither realize it until its almost too late. One is a charmer and quite the talker, a detective of many cards, both brain and brawn. The other is a poet, calm and collected, a criminal who is able to talk their way out of even the harshest of situations.

He always did love freefalls.

This quote is a very simple one but i think it really captures the feeling of finding something so worth life its more than life itself. This scene was when they first met, and this was from the criminals POV after he saw the detective for the first time, it was more or less feeling a kind of sense of relief, as the criminal thought the infamous detective was going to be a somewhat older person, strict and tense in their gaze. This also was a sense of curiosity because the detective was nothing like the boy imagined, and the way the criminal says he always did love freefalls in interesting because it shows how the idea of a “thrilling” chase or something new does not stress but makes him feel more happy. It’s how only moments later, as the criminal mentions he never let’s himself get selfish, he let’s himself do so only for this one moment, and the whole “freefall” thing gives me the sense he felt like he could let himself go for once, like he didn’t have to worry about consequences for this time, like he felt safe under the arms of the other.

Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby by F.Scott Fitzgerald. Right now at the beginning of Chapter 3 Nick is describing his neighbour Great Gatsbys house ragger where the guests get louder and rowdier the more they drink. Now, it’s not only about the party. Majority of this chapter explains that Gatsby has an odd out vibe to him, Nick and Jordan try to dig around for more information

“I believe that on the first night I went to Gatsby’s house I was one of the few guests who had actually been invited. People were not invited they went there. Sometimes they came and went without having met Gatsby at all, came for the party with a simplicity of heart that was its own ticket of admission.” (Pg.41)

I believe that this quote shows more than just what it says. It shows a sense of entitlement from Nick about being one of the few who actually was invited. He felt interconnected.

From Manitoba to Victoria PW#2

I would like to tell you about my road trip to Victoria, I had to go through 3 provinces and stop at a lot of gas stations and Tim Hortons but it was one of the best family trips I’ve ever had and it brought me here! Let me bring you back a bit, when I had first initially heard that I was going to move to Victoria, Bc..let’s just say I was not too pleased. I hated the idea of leaving my friends and the place where I grew up to go to some island because of “ocean views” and “amazing weather”! I thought my parents where plain out stupid to leave everything behind, but I put on a brave face and try to make the most of it because at that point there was no changing my parents minds they were already packing up our stuff in box’s and buying a new house! Before I knew it the car was packed up and my best friend doriels family was moving to the island with us, I was so excited that I would have a friend with me and at that point I wasn’t to scared about moving anymore. I woke up early at 6 am to start the drive my grandma and two dogs sat next to me and my parents in front, behind us I another car was my grandpa and uncle. We first stopped in Regina and when I looked at the traffic lights they were sideways, I was surprised because since when can traffic lights be sideways? We stayed in a nice hotel with a pool and water slide and I got to go down it a couple times! Honestly the whole vibe of the place was very 80’s movie, it was very bright and colourful and everytime a song would would play in the lobby or pool area my dad would go “oh I know this song” yes dad because it’s from when you were growing up aka the 80’s.
Our next stop was Edmonton! I don’t really remember to much about Edmonton other than our randomly fancy hotel with a crowded pool and bar. The room in the hotel was quite nice it just felt very luxurious compared to the one in Regina, that said the pool which I was quite excited to go to was insanely crowded so I just decided not to go.
Then we went to Kelowna which for some reason had a massive heat wave just as we were passing through!  When we got to the hotel we were all tired and very hot but when we got to the front desk we were told none of the rooms had ac! We walked into our room and it was so humid and dark so we instantly turned back around, got a refund, and went to the nearest holiday inn. When we got to the inn it was honestly so much better than last hotel, I layed down and took a nap. In the morning we headed straight to the car and started driving to the farey terminals in Vancouver to get to the island, when we got into the fairy it was so very cool as I have never been on such a big boat! When we arrived it was about an hour by car, I honestly fell asleep. When we made it I was shipmen awake to see my new home and I suppose it was all history from there!

Master and Man Personal Responce

In my personal opinion master and man was just not that astounding as I thought it would be. When I had came home when we first started reading master and man my parents had told me that it was a great story and that I’ll enjoy reading it, I in fact did not this story. Throughout the whole story Vasili was just a rude person with 0 respect for anyone around him but himself. Nikita was just there mainly because he was told to and also didn’t want Vasili to make any stupid decisions out in the cold by himself. That’s why the only character I liked was Mukhorty he was strong and honourable and pulled them everywhere they needed to go, at one point Nikita even let Mukhorty lead back on to the path! Mukhorty honestly didn’t deserve what happened to him he was the best character in that entire story and never gave any complaints, the way he died was just so heartbreaking to me.

Other than Mukhortys tragic death the main thing I didn’t like about this book was the fact that the beginning was a good introduction, then the middle dragged on for like the entire book and then when it came to the ending it just said “well like Nikita lived for 20 more years than died”. I was so confused on why Tolstoy would make the longest story then end it that way? Why not just kill of Nikita and then your ending can be short because they both just die I mean if you’re going to make one of them live I obviously want more of a detailed ending.

I mean I get the plot and I guess Tolstoys whole thing was to just write a tragedy, but I believe that this tragedy can happen in real life I mean it just takes some greedy guy and a loyal one!!

independent reading – IRJE #2

kissing Kosher by jean meltzer:

this a is a part of the book in which avital meets ethan.

“Im here for the job intervew he said, speaking quickly, waving in her direction.

“my name is ethan rosenberg” he explained , nervously glancing toward Rafi. “I have an interview scheduled with the general manager here at two thirty. I believe her name is—” he glanced down at this sheet to double check”—-Avital Cohen . we confirmed via email on monday” p.15.

Avital squeezed her eyes shut, wanting to die of embarrasment.

I chose this part because it makes me very nice that people who love each other know each other because it can end in something very nice.

IRJE #2: Kissing Kosher

In Kissing Kosher by Jean Meltzer there is a part when Avital rejects Ethan’s kiss because of her illness, she is so distracted and can’t have a relationship right now because the pelvic pain was always worse and worse. This happened when Ethan was helping Avital and working extra hours because she couldn’t work at the bakery alone, they started looking at each other’s lips and they kissed, at the half of the kiss Avital told him that she couldn´t.

“Why are you so good to me?” she asked quietly.
“Because you’re good to me,” he said simply.
Her heart ached. Here he was again, saying all the right things.
“So where does that leave us?” Avital asked sadly. “A woman who can’t have relationships , and a man who’s lying to everyone about his identity?”
“I don’t know,” Ethan said, resting his head on her shoulder. “But we’ll figure it out together.” (p. 250).

This part of the book really breaks me out because both of them want to be together but the fear of not being enough, being disappointed and being in a relationship is stronger. So we can see that two broken people with a lot of personal issues is not helping. To love other people, you have to love yourself first.

“Master and Man” By Leo Tolstoy; ‘To Change or Not to Change?’ PR

‘Master and Man’ was a boring story for me, it wouldn’t be a book I would pick willingly. Tolstoy made a really good story and plot. I feel as though as both of the MC’s should’ve died, it definitely would’ve made an interesting story. Vasili was selfish throughout the entire book while Nikita the complete opposite, he didn’t even think of himself while he was dying. Vasili was obsessed with money, I still can’t believe he tried to work on Christmas holiday! My feelings through-out the book stay the same, bored, expected, and ‘oh wow’; I did feel a bit more when the horse died, I wanted to shed a tear.

The ending was soooooo “A Christmas Carol” coded, Vasili reminds me of Scrooge. I didn’t really like the ending, it was kinda ‘oh wow… expected.’, I was just really uninterested in this book overall.

This story strikes me as more unrealistic, the way Nikita is like a ‘saint’ and Vasili is so money-hungry. The title of the story totally threw me off when I found out it was more ‘Nikita and Vasili as man and God as master’.
