This Saturday was a moment of history, that day we had a game against Coastal, at team located in Vancouver. This was a game that we needed to make a statement to the league. The game started off pretty slow in the first half, but all of the sudden, the opposing team was given a penalty that was totally undeserved, I mean it was not even a penalty. Our goal keeper made a great save, but unfortunately the player converted on the rebound. We were down 1-0 and we knew we had to make a comeback, in the last minutes of the first half my teamate David scored a beautiful freekick while the goalkeeper also midreading it. It was halftime and it was tied 1-1, our team had all the momentum. I had to play better in the second half (which I did). In the second half I scored a penalty and a nice solo goal. We ended up winning 5-1, in other words it was a beat down. I felt very satisfied with my performance because in the second half I was working harder and wanted to win more. Our record as a team is 5 wins, 1 draw, and 1 loss. That means that we are second in the BCSPL, I feel like I am impacting winning because I have 8 goals in 7 games which I am proud of. Our next few games are against tougher opponents, but I am excited for the journey.

In the book The Magic of Thinking Big by David J. Schwartz, there was a quote in the book that inspires me to work hard and to stay motivated. It even gives me a 30-day progress guide to measure my progress towards my goals. This is what the quote said by the author:

Success means self-respect, continually finding more real happiness and satisfaction from life, being able to do more for those who depend on you. Success means winning (p. 13).

I chose this quotation for many different reasons, but the main one is that I feel like I am having a lot of success right now with my sports and schooling. Another reason I chose this quote is seeing that the author defined the word success for us readers. The reasons why I think I am having success right now is because my team is second place and I am impacting winning by scoring goals for my team, I also feel like my grades are getting better. The one thing I need to improve on is just being a little bit more consistent. To summarize, this quote is very inspiring for me to be a even better individual.

PR: The Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Reading this book was very confusing from my perspective, many unlucky things happen to the Ancient Mariner because of the sin he committed. 5 main characters are: The Ancient Mariner (the boat), the Wedding guest, a character attending a wedding celebration who is stopped by the Ancient Mariner and compelled to listen to his story. The pilot is the person that is steering the ship around. Shipmates are the people that work on the ship. Hermit, one of the people who save the Ancient Mariner, plus frees the Ancient Mariner of its guilt. The story starts off with the boat being stuck in the Arctic, then in the doldrums where there is no wind. The worst thing happens to the ship when he shoots the Albatross (seagull) with his crossbow, this means he has sinned. He is forced to wear the dead Albatross around his neck as a symbol of guilt. They see another ship in the distance with death and a woman, they play a game with the die, the woman ends up winning, so all the shipmates die. Just because of the Ancient Mariner committed that sin. My argument is that killing an Albatross with a bow is not a sin because he needs to have food to survive. I kill spiders, but I would not consider that a sin, also meaning that killing a seagull is not one either. The Ancient Mariner could have done a million things much worse than that. That was nothing, back then I bet you there were a bunch of Albatrosses.

Reading the 5 stanzas was stressful, but helpful. I am very good at memorizing, the 5 stanzas are talking about what happened when there was wind, they were moving at a good pace. However, when there was no wind and the sails dropped, they were pretty much stuck, it was sad for them. My favourite stanza was the fourth one: “Day after day, day after day, We stuck, nor breath nor motion; As idle as a painted ship Upon a painted ocean”. This was my favourite for many reasons, its telling us what it would be like on a ship without any wind, this for me was also the harderst part to memorize for some reason. During the oral presentation I did a fantastic job for the first 3 stanzas using good memorization, volume and speed, but as I got to the last 2 stanzas I got a little ahead of myself, thats when I needed a little help from Mr. Mackight, in the end I did finish, I will be honest I did make some mistakes. Overall, it was a good experience and I think I did the best I could with the circumstances. The whole book was pretty good too, exploring themes of guilt, redemption, forgiveness, the natural world and the consequences of human actions.

PR: The Strange case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde

I will be writing about what I like and did not like from this story, I will also be giving my opinions on the different characters.

The main characters of the story are: Dr Jekyll, a well respected scientist. Mr. Hyde, a sinister man and mysterious man. Mr. Utterson, Jekyll’s lawyer and friend. Mr Hyde commits many crimes in London, causing fear from the rest of the people that live there. Utterson tries to investigate the relationship between Hyde and Dr Jekyll. It turns out that they are the same person by the aid of the potion that Jekyll created. In the high point of the story Jekyll turns into Hyde without the help of the potion, he is unable to reverse the transformations. Causing Dr Jekyll to lose his life. I liked the story because it made me think of the both good and evil aspects of a human. Sometimes I want to do something bad, but I can’t because I will regret it and get punished. But with Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde he does not have any regret or shame for the horrible things he did.

The things that I don’t like about this story were how random the book was. I mean when I got the book I was not expecting to read a book like that when 2 different characters are the same character, that was a little weird, plus unrealistic. Another thing I am not to fond of his how old the book is, as I was reading the book its vocabulary just sounded old. Overall, it was a good book for many reasons that I have listed, but it was not my favourite thats for sure.

PR to The story of Joseph

The character that I feel for the most is Joseph. He has gone through so much in the story, first of all, his brothers don’t like him because he is Dad’s favorite and he doesn’t work. At the start of the story he is nearly killed, but instead, their brothers just leave him in the pit, and then the brothers sell Joseph into slavery. When he is put into slavery the person’s wife accuses Joseph of raping her. So now he is working at the prison, he meets a butler who had a dream about restoring his butler ship. That meant that Joseph had to interpret them. The butler’s dream came true. However, he forgets to take Joseph out with him. The guy has had to go through so much, it doesn’t help when your brothers don’t like you for no reason. Another character I feel bad for is Benjamin because he was almost punished for having the silver cup.

A character that I appreciate in the story is Judah because when Benjamin was caught with the silver cup in his sack he was going to be punished, but Judah wants to take Benjamin’s place, he thinks that the brothers have changed and that they weren’t going to abandon Benjamin as they did to Joseph many years before. That goes to show that Judah cares and is sorry for what they did to him. Soon Joseph makes himself known to his brothers, but he doesn’t accuse them of it being there fault. If that was me I would cuss them out for there actions. Joseph restrains himself instead. When the brothers went home they told Jacob (Dad), he couldn’t even believe it. So they went and Joseph and the Pharaoh told him that he could dwell in Egypt for the rest of his life. That was how the story ended, overall it was a pretty good story, it was kind of hard to understand in some parts other than that it was pretty entertaining.

Personal response

In the book “An Enemy of the People” my overall feelings for the book is completely mixed between characters. My feelings towards Dr. Stockmann is that he is a good person trying to do the right thing for the town and the baths. On the contrary my respect for Peter, is not that much because he knows that the report on the baths is true, he just doesn’t want to admit it. I agree with what Thomas says about the compact majority about them being fools and uneducated. I feel very bad for Thomas because everyone was on his side, but then suddenly Aslaksen and Hovstad support Peter instead of Thomas, because Peter convinced them that the report was not true. Thomas’s whole family I had a lot of respect for, Peter has treated his brother with no respect. If that was me in all the bad situations Thomas has been, I would have probably punched him in the face. Plus not only is his brother against him, in fact the whole population is against him calling him “an enemy of the people” when all Thomas is doing is trying to speak the truth, while the normal towspeople are being lied to.

In the book The Science of Nutrition by Rhiannon Lambert, there was a quote that struck me deeply. It was a quote that made me look at Japan in a different light because I thought they were not in very good shape physically.

“Japan has among the highest life expectancy and lowest obesity rates globally.

Its diet generally emphasizes plant-based eating of leafy vegetables,

soybean-based foods like tofu and miso,

and grains like rice and noodles,

with animal protein from fish and pork”.

This quote goes to show how far behind Canada and the United States are in this, in North America there is a lot of obesity. Also we eat a lot of unhealthy food from fast food chains. Reading this inspires me to implement food like that in my diet to live a healthy lifestyle, while getting optimum performance on the field.

PW#4 2 goals!

This was one of the rarest things that happens in sports! On Saturday, I did something that totally surprised me. It was a nice day outside for soccer and it was our last game of preseason. We wanted to end on a high note (we did!). We were playing against Vancouver United, and before the game started I had a good chat with my coach talking about the future to me as a player, basically how far he thinks I can go. Our assistant coach was going over corner kicks with us, I told myself that I was going to score a header. Soon the game started and I was feeling confident, at the start of the game, both teams were feeling each other out. The other team was aggressive, I was getting crunched by their players. It got to the point where I was about to ask the coach for a substitution, but in my head, I said that I had to persevere through it. After about 40 minutes we were dominating, we also had a corner kick. I was on the right side of the goalie and the ball came in focused on the ball. Then BAM!! it went into the near post off my header, the feeling is something you can not describe. This was not the first time I have scored off a corner as well. During half-time our coach was pleased not satisfied though. Then in the 65th minute we had another corner, this time I was in front off the goalie. The ball came in perfectly, I     redirected the ball off my head into the far post top corner. After those 2 goals, I thought how rare it is for the same player to score off a corner kick. We scored another goal after that, which I was involved in. The game ended 3-1. They were a decent team, but we just outclassed them on and off the ball. Overall, it was a great preseason for the team (4wins-1draw-4losses) and for me as a player (6 goals). During the actual season I know that we will have a great season and I will score and provide a lot of goals.

IRJE#3 MY BROS

In the book ‘Do it Anyways’, there was a quote that, made me think of never giving up on something, whether it’s homework to a big fitness event.

The little tricks

that they knew through experiences

which I didn’t until it was too late.

I went from feeling awesome and saying:

I’m going to finish this thing,

to, That’s it I’m done,

a split-second decision full of regret.

This quote came from the Goruck Selection. It’s a fitness course that he didn’t finish unfortunately, the thing is that he felt very prepared, but the key is the mental game and he had the thought of quitting. When you quit, you’ll always feel the regret later. So when I was reading it reminded me to never quit and to always finish whatever you are doing.

PW#3: Things I want to be able to do.

There are many things that I want to be able to do by the end of the year, but to keep it simple here are the 4 things I want to do by the end of the year.

  1. Learn Spanish, this one is the most important because I want to be capable of speaking 3 languages fluently. I can already speak English and French fluently, I mean speaking 3 languages would be such an advantage. It would lead to so many more job opportunities compared to others that can only speak English. I am learning on Duolingo, I am making big strides, plus it also helps to have Mexican international students to help me as well. Learning Spanish will help me so much.
  2. Being able to draw portraits, this year it has been my first time drawing people and making portraits. I have been really enjoying it and I have been developing my skills quickly. However, I know that it will take time. I’m gonna start with easier things, then I will make portraits that are a harder and full figure.
  3. Be able to do a backflip flat, I know it sounds very risky, but I think that if I can pull it off it would look very cool. This is something that I want to be able to do, mainly to impress the girls. Last year, I was able to do a backflip off a bridge and that was something I was very proud of. This time it’s gonna be much harder, to make this dream I guess I could say happen, I’ve been watching Youtube videos.
  4. Being able to jump higher, this is kind of linking to being able to do a backflip, but this can be used for a lot more. Before I tell you what I’m gonna use it for, I’m gonna tell you how I’m gonna be able to do this. The answer is plyometrics. It’s exercises that will make me jump higher. If I can jump higher it will give me a massive advantage. I play soccer and basketball, in soccer I will win more headers and it basketball it could lead to me being able to dunk.

In the book: Do It Anyway Overcome your perceived physical and mental limits, there were 2 quotes that really struck me, when your an athlete. This happens to a lot of us athletes out there because of teamates and coaches the 2 quotes were:

“‘That’s fine.

They don’t need me and I don’t need them.

I quit.”’ (p.19)

”’You have the talent

and the skill to make it to the next level,

but you’re not mature enough.”’ (p.20)

I chose both of those quotes, because I really like sports. However, they both have bigger meanings, there could have been a lot of reasons why he quit, but the reason he quit was because he was benched. He didn’t want to put the work in to start, so he decided to quit, which is sad in my eyes. For the second quote, the man was talking about how a lot of coaches said that, it doesn’t just come down to talent, it comes down to the amount of work you put in, how you hold yourself accountable, and take responsability for your actions, he didn’t. Therefore that is one of the biggest regrets of his career. You would probably surprised with how many athletes are immature.

Master and Man: To change or not to change

This is a story that is very intriguing to me, I feel like every few pages you have a different emotion or view on the characters. The story makes me feel of how Vasili was not being nice to Nikita, but then Nikita was dying and Vasili sacrificed his life for Nikita to live. It makes me feel that if your not a nice person, you can always change in the future. I mean what’s stopping you. Same goes with Vasili because he didn’t have to save Nikita’s life did he. If he didn’t we would have had the same views on him, but since he did sacrifice his life for Nikita. In my eyes we should look at him from a different view now. At the end of the story Vasili was wondering if he should’ve gone in the first place, he didn’t think he needed the grove anyways. It made me wonder if Vasili was changing because at the start, that’s all he cared about but now he had a certain view that money wasn’t the main focus anymore, he was satisfied that he already had enough of it. He was looking at life from a different scope and for me that is changing at it’s finest. Plus after he sacrificed his life, Nikta lived an extra 20 years with his family, that is Vasili being selfless. At the start of the story I liked Nikita and was kind of skeptical about Vasili, but at the end my feeling towards Vasili were much better, he gained my respect.

This is definetily a realistic story back then, I can tell by the way the writer Leo Tolstoy writes, it sounds rustic and old. You can tell it is realistic because of the setting and what they use for transportation. The story is in a village in Russia. Plus they are using sledges. In my eyes back then this would happen a lot with people trying to buy something and going while at night, The only thing is the part where they get lost multiple times and they never find it. I believe that if there was a big snowstorm though and people were going to buy something lucrative they would do whatever it takes. If people were doing whatever it takes, people would definitely risk there lives to get there hands on something worth thousands of rubles and make a huge profit. Therefore this is a realistic story.

This weekend was wild and I’m going to tell you all about. This week was Thanksgiving. But before we talk about our big feast, I have to talk about how we got there, so right after school my dad drove me all the way toComox. It was great to see my family. After I got home, I had a little bite to eat and then went to bed. By the way, ever single day I was getting great sleep which was great. On Saturday morning, I watched some soccer games that were live on my computer. After that I did a core workout, then I made breakfast and hanged out with my brother. I was also helping my Dad with putting the boat in it’s shelter and mowing the lawn. After that my Mom came home and told me that we were going to a restaurant called Martine’s, it was a great meal I had Seafood linguine it was creamy and delicious. When we got back home I was very tired, so I watched a little bit of TV, then went to bed. Finally the day I was looking forward to the most, the actual dinner. Before that though I did another intense core workout and also going to the turf with my Dad. My goal was to burn as many calories as I could, so I could eat a lot! I helped with making the food. The food was on the table, but first we all had to tell what we were thankful for. The meal was great because the turkey was crispy while also being juicy. After dinner we watched Lupin, then crashed to bed. The next day I went for a run and a soccer session in my front yard. After, It was time to head back to Victoria

In the book the Wealthy Barber, by David Hilton. A quote that was said in the book made me jump out of my seat. It was mind blowing!

”When the Indians sold Manhattan to the dutch for beads,

worth twenty four dollars,

it seemed like the natives got taken.

But if they had invested that money at eight percent interest,

today their tribe would be worth trillions of dollars.” (p.35)

I chose this quote because it showst that if your patient, then your investment will succeed in the long run. Plus 24$ to a trillion$ is absolutely ridiculous. When reading this quote, I think of what it would be like if the First Nation peolple had a trillion$. Would it change our history with the First Nations? Finally, another thing that caught my eye was the author saying: ”Indian.” Nowadays we don’t use that word, it’s extremely racist.

PW#1 A day in my life.

This is a day in my wonderful life, everyday I wake up at 7:30 in the morning, have a shower and get ready for the day. For breakfast, I always eat my Vector (cereal brand). It is very sweet, but is good for the body. After breakfast I get dressed and head off to school. When I arrive to school I greet all my friends and head off to my classes. School is something I enjoy a lot, I make it a habit to always be positive and try to make every school day enjoyable. When school is finished my grandpa picks me up at 3:20, I head back home and get prepared for my football session. To get prepared I will usually eat pasta, because it is great for energy. Now that I’m ready I head off to PISE to train, every session I try to take something out of every one. Plus it is great for my physical health. It’s always great having some banter with my teammates. After football training, most likely I’m drenched in sweat. So when I get home I need a shower, change into some very stylish clothes. I will always be craving a sandwich, so that’s what I do. My grandparents always give me grief for not cleaning up. So I clean up after they tell me to. Now I look on my computer and look at Managebac and do a little bit of homework. After my homework I do my 15 minutes of reading, right now I am reading The wealthy barber, it is a very intriguing book. Finally, I have a little bit of free time, so I can go on my phone and communicate with my friends that live in Comox and look at videos on the internet.  I will sometimes play my grandparents in a game of chess or hang out with my cousins. Then to end the day I will do a full body workout and then stretch after. That is the end of the day. I go to bed at 9:30 and wake up in the morning and do it again mostly.

Getting to know me

Hello, my name is Frederick. I am from the Comox Valley, I’m here because of my soccer. This is my second year at Brookes and am so far loving it here. My biggest interests are athletics (soccer, basketball, running, tennis) and traveling to different places around the world.

While I was on vacation I was reading a book called the Wealthy Barber and a book about Barcelona’s football club. I am not the biggest reader to be honest, but when I’m in a good book it’s hard for me to put down. The books that I enjoy reading are biographies on people that are successful. This school year I want to read at least 15 minutes a day. If I can do this I believe that I will be able to read quicker because right now I’m a little slow. When I’m reading if I don’t understand something I will reread the page until I understand.

As a writer I think that my writing is very organized and neat. However, this is a great opportunity for me to develop a sense of using more complex words in my writing. Sometimes when I write I will go on and on without stopping, so I need to add more periods when writing. I am very excited for this years English class and hope to do great things.
