IRJE #6 The handmaids tale

The Handmaid’s tale is a book written by Margaret Atwood and this book is about a possibly near future in which Offred is one of the Handmaids and her purpose is to breed and if she doesnt get pregnant she will be sent into a toxic work camp or become a sex slave, and she used to be a normal woman but all of that is now gone.

“No guns though, even they could not be trusted with guns.
Guns were for the guards, specially picked from the Angels. The guards weren’t allowed inside the building except when called, and we weren’t allowed out, except for our walks, twice daily, two by two around the football field which was enclosed now by a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire. The Angels stood outside it with their backs to us. They were objects of fear to us, but of something else as well. If only they would look. If only we could talk to them.
Something could be exchanged, we thought, some deal made, some trade-off, we still had our bodies. That was our fantasy.”

I chose this quote since i think its crazy to believe that this a book about a posibly near future which can be really scary and i think this quote explains how they treat the handmaids and how they dont fell good and feel scared which is sad and scary.
