Regina introduction

My name is Regina Reinoso Cordero, I was born on April 21 of 2009 in Mexico City and I have lived there my whole life, I have studied in Olinca world school since kindergarten and this is my first year at Brookes Westshore some of the things I like to do are baking, listen to music and ice skate, I started skating when I was 3 years old and I really enjoy skating, it helps me to clear my mind.

Reading, When I was little, I liked reading and I used to read a lot but as time went by, I started to read less. Now I dont really enjoy reading but I would like to enjoy reading and create a habit of reading more.

As for writing I don’t usually write much, I enjoy writing sometimes even though I don’t do it often, I think I can be highly creative when it comes to writing and sometimes writing can help me to express myself but it’s not something I would do.

I took a book and a pencil.

My name is Valeria Lama Morales and I am studying 9th grade in Brookes Westshore. This is my first year here and it’s an exchange year in Canada, in Victoria B.C. I am a very creative person, especially in the part of painting and drawing. I am an introvert and an extrovert person, it depends on how open you are to me and how open I feel in that moment. I am a person who enjoys her friend’s company at parties or reunions and one who enjoys spending time with her close family. I am a studying and working person who always puts her best effort into the things I do.

As a reader, I am more or less. Two years ago during the pandemic, I had a lot of insomnia so I started reading at night, if it was a book that I liked I could read like five hours in a row, from 2:30 am in the morning till I saw the sunrise, so reading started to be a hobby. Now I don’t read a lot, I don’t have a book that I really like and I prefer spending time with my friends, family, reunions, sports, etc… than reading a book. Because if I don’t like a book it’s so difficult for me to finish.

As a writer, I think I have potential but I am not really good, also in English is more complicated because in Spanish it’s easier for me to understand, not repeating words, orthography, grammar, etc… also as a writer I think is difficult for me to order my ideas and put the right amount of information, it can be a long paragraph with things that I shouldn’t put or a short paragraph because I have lack of ideas. One thing that I think I am good at writing is that I have the creativity of knowing how to write about and know some points that might help to understand better.

All about me

I am Olivia McIntosh and I was born in surrey but mostly grew up in Campbell river since my mom was pregnant with my brother and than we move to Victoria since most of our family is up here and there are better schools. I have just started Brookes Westshore but before I was attending St Johns Academy. Some of my Interests are Art, Sports, Jujitsu, and Puzzles.

I feel like I am not the greatest reader and I do not really understand what I am reading most of the time. Last year at my old school we did a-lot of novels as a class and would do quizzes a-lot. This year my goal is to practice my reading and understanding what i am reading, and maybe taking notes after I have read.

I have always loved writing stories or just practicing my handwriting, my writing skills are pretty good, my dad always writes so I ask him to go over my work for me to make sure it has just the right grammar and no run on sentences, something I do a-lot is use run on sentences but I am getting better by practicing and writing more and more.

To Smile

On May 20, 2009, a child was born, and her name was Lola. Born inside of a Christian family, Lola follows the religion Christianity. Although born in a religious family, following of the bible and God, she has never thought anyone to be lower if they follow a different religion—or no religion at all. She likes to draw, a lot, and her best friends consist of three simple people: Helaina, Radmir, and Elyana (who is in her core class). Even though Lola has her best friends, she focuses on school most—at least she tries, for Lola cares about her family too, yes? She’s a little slower than her classmates—she’s very much slower than her classmates. Yet Lola works very hard to keep up, though her stress and anxiety can get in the way, its important to know she needs breaks sometimes, and gets very embarrassed when she is stressed, hence the silence. But it is good to know even through the stress, she tries, and even if not appreciated, at least she did.

Lola loves reading, and as she cuddles and pets her dog, in her dimly lit bedroom consisting of 2 lamps and a broken ceiling light that (somehow) even when repaired still doesn’t work, she smiles. And she smiles that bright eyed smile, the type that makes it seem like sunlight seeps through the cracks of your curtains, even when its not there, even on a rainy day where no said sun is visible. She smiles, she smiles that type of smile that makes you smile, because it looks funny, and that makes you smile more because now you’re laughing. She smiles a smile that crinkles her eyes and downturns her lips even though the happiness is visible. She smiles, because she has looked at her dog and felt happy, that very dog that takes up her entire one-person bed that is higher than her waist and every night she barely gets a drop of sleep due to not moving her dog, for she feels happy when (even though she has school tomorrow) her dog gets to sleep. Lola is happy because her dog is happy, she is simply feeling nice, simply feeling good. And she will get up, and she will throw herself onto her fluffy puppy, who wears brown fur with curls as tight as the locks on Lola’s head, and she will smile, and laugh. She will smile a smile that serves purpose more than a simple grin, she will fluff the fur on her dogs’ head, and kiss her forehead, for she smiles a smile of content and appreciation.

Lola sits, typing on her computer as she thinks of words to include, and she feels fine, completely fine. And she feels bored, completely bored. And then Ms. Bayes walks into the lobby and talks about… random things, and for some reason, she also has plums in her bag. Lola listens in, and waves goodbye, it’s a little funny, because why does she have plums in her purse? But as Lola writes this sheet, she yawns because she simply sits on the word ‘because’…because she can’t think. Lola looks up, in front of her and thinks that maybe, even though her password was changed, can she simply have enough time to upload this? Maybe she will, and certainly with six sentences already she picks up her phone to text her dad, whom is currently in LA, “I love you”. Lola doesn’t mind, having time to herself, but she certainly misses her dad when she scrolls up the text to see a picture of her father, carrying her giraffe which he bought for her the day she was born, Lola doesn’t mind, because its her dad, she loves her dad, and she sighs as she thinks to close the last sentence, then makes her decision.

english thing

My name is Sydney Stewart, and I am 13 years old. I am turning 14 on October 26th. I have adhd and I was born here, in Victoria and I have never moved in my life. I currently have 2 cats, which I have had since I was around 1 year old. My cats are both Abyssinian and their names are Summe and Quatche. I did Karate in the past, but I ended up quitting around a year or two ago as it wasn’t as fun as It used to be. In my old school, GNS. I did badminton and it was probably my favourite sport. At home, I enjoy playing on my racing simulator, my pc, and VR. Some fun racing games I play are F1 2023 and Need for speed heat. This is my first year at Brookes, and at this school, I don’t have to travel over 15 kilometers a day to get to school, and in fact its so close, If I walked to Brookes it would take less time than it did for me to drive to my old school. In my first 5 days, we have gone outside a lot and it’s a fun part of this school. I am looking forward to this year and I hope its more fun than GNS.

I haven’t really been interested in reading that much, but there is one author that I actually enjoy reading books from. His name is Rick Riordan, and my favourite book series from him was the Kane Chronicles, the only time I enjoy reading books are when the books are made by him.

I don’t usually write at home, but when i do write stuff it usually isn’t stories. The only time I write at home is when I’m writing ideas for something. The only time I usually write stories is when we are supposed to in school. When we are writing stories in school, I am very good at it and I am able to easily make the stories entertaining. In my old school, I got good grades when it came to writing stories. I find it fun to write stories In school, but at home I would rather do other things.

My Dog’s POV of me !!

My owner, Eva, is 14 and is a new student at her new school. Now that she’s at school, she doesn’t play with me as much. She loves to play volleyball outside, reading (she ignores me when she reads.), and she loves hanging out with her friends a lot. She is also a very busy person.

My wonderful owner as a writer isn’t that great.. every time she decides to read it out loud to me, I cringe. Unless it’s horror she’s writing about, then she’s really good; Or if she’s actually got time then she starts writing as if she were making a book.

As a reader, my absolutely amazing owner is amazing at reading. She reads as much as she can, she loves to read lots of different genres like fantasy, history, romance and etc(really anything that piques her interest). She also really likes it when the books are really long, especially when she can speed-run the book and finish it a day. Her reading time is usually 15 minutes to an hour if she’s lucky.

So yeah, that’s my 10/10 lovely amazing wonderful owner who I love so much!

-My puppy Lola xx

The Magnificent World of Ryan

Hello, are you ready to venture on a journey all about me?

My name is Ryan Bisgrove, I am 14 years old, I was born here in Canada and I have been staying in the chaos at Brookes since 6th grade. Some of the things I love and am interested in is games, I have a VR and a pc and I love playing both, and I also like board games, I do monopoly most the time with my family and usually my brother wins. I also like hanging out with some of my friends, I’ve been friends with one guy for maybe 9 years and I still love hanging out with him. I also love music I even played drums for a bit but then stopped I also had a guitar that I would fiddle around with. Once a week I also do a private class of boxing and I love doing it, I don’t really know why I just find it amazing knowing how to fight

sometimes when I have free time and I’m at home I’ll read a bit. Reading isn’t one of my favorite things to do but after I found the right book it was great. The new book series I found that I’ve been reading for a while is any FNAF book. I love those books because they’re gruesome and creepy. I have read around 6-8 FNAF books and I still love the series. I’m also not a very fast reader but I’m slowly getting better.

Instead of reading I sometimes do writing. I don’t write very often though, but any time I do write I do the more suspicious and creepy kind of writing. I also have a huge habit of ending my story on a cliffhanger or giving it a dramatic ending. If I do writing on paper I think that I have, or had some pretty good printing skills. in elementary school the teachers said my printing improved a lot quicker than the other students.

Hi, my name is Maria Blanco I´m from Mexico San Luis Potosi, my favorite color is blue and I’m too interest in marine animals and dinosaurs also I want to study marine biology and photography, I love videogames, The Legend of Zelda is my favorite. I like watching movies and listen to music and I like to learn new thinks.

I like reading but I don’t usually do it, I would like to read more often because I know reading have a lot of benefits and there are many books that interest me like Stephen King books, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, the tales of the brothers Grimm, Alice in Wonderland, etc. I would like to start reading in English, I like to read poems, I read a lot of Japanese Mangas and now I´m reading a book that calls “Rupture” that is in Spanish.

I’m not very good at grammar in English but I think that I just need to read more. I like to write about my day in a diary and write about the thinks that interest me like information of some music artist, animals, dinosaurs, etc. I would like to have the ability to understand, organize and express my feelings well enough to be able to write a good poem.

all abt me

Hello, my name is Romina, but I prefer to be called Romi. I was born in Monterrey, Mexico and I currently live there. I’m 14 years old and my birthday is on May 31st. I have 2 little brothers that are 10 and 12 years old. I’m a swimmer, but I used to be a gymnast. I’ve done swimming since I was 2, but I left the sport 2 times and I did gymnastics 10 years. I have a pet hamster and his name is Gavi, just like the football player. My first language is Spanish, then English and I started learning German 3 years ago, but I wasn’t very fluent. I saw we got to learn French here which I kind of got excited.

This is my 1st year at Brookes Westshore, and honestly I’ve liked it a lot in here. There’s always something fun to do and people here are very nice and friendly. I have a lot of expectations but mainly my expectations are to make new friends from other countries, learn new cultures, practice my English, be more independent, learn and to have fun.

To be honest I don’t like to read at all, I find it very boring and sometimes I get very dizzy while I’m reading, but there’s and exception. I love to read informational books to learn about famous people, important events, wars, etc. I think that’s the only way people will see me reading a book and enjoying it.

Once I got here I got very excited about English because I love writing, that’s like my safe place, and the subject English is very much reading and writing, which I’m very interested in, but specially just the reading part. I’m very excited to practice my spelling, grammar and my public speaking since it’ll help me a lot for high school and for many things in the future,

Elyana’s introduction!

Heyy My name is Ely, short for Elyana. I moved to Victoria 2 years ago and was a Brookes Westshore student since then. I was born in Singapore on 15th May 2009. My main interest is art, more specifically not abstract art, literally any other art form. i tried to apply to McDonalds but I couldn’t work in the end because I don’t have a work permit.

I like reading comics and biographies the most and i’m not really interested in other book genres. I’ m currently reading “The Definitive book of Body Language” by Allan and Barbara Pease. Other than that i’m not too I interested in reading but I do not mind it at all. The book is about how to read peoples emotions and how to accurately communicate with them.

I prefer writing over reading because it doesn’t bore me and I can really express my feelings over paper. I would like to improve my writing skills over the year because I enjoy writing and would like to accurately acquire knowledge about how to do it right. I think in English, writing and teamwork are my strongest learning abilities.

Getting to know me

Hello, my name is Frederick. I am from the Comox Valley, I’m here because of my soccer. This is my second year at Brookes and am so far loving it here. My biggest interests are athletics (soccer, basketball, running, tennis) and traveling to different places around the world.

While I was on vacation I was reading a book called the Wealthy Barber and a book about Barcelona’s football club. I am not the biggest reader to be honest, but when I’m in a good book it’s hard for me to put down. The books that I enjoy reading are biographies on people that are successful. This school year I want to read at least 15 minutes a day. If I can do this I believe that I will be able to read quicker because right now I’m a little slow. When I’m reading if I don’t understand something I will reread the page until I understand.

As a writer I think that my writing is very organized and neat. However, this is a great opportunity for me to develop a sense of using more complex words in my writing. Sometimes when I write I will go on and on without stopping, so I need to add more periods when writing. I am very excited for this years English class and hope to do great things.

All things Lilly

My name is LillyAnn Kovshov, I am Russian/Ukranian and was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and recently moved to Victoria a year ago. I attended Dunsmuir middle school in the 8th grade, this is my first time attending  Brookes Westshore this year so the school is fairly new to me. I enjoy playing badminton and often go to courts to play with my friends, when it comes to Badminton  competitions I like teamwork and often like to think I have a growth mindset.

I have a very good relationship with reading in fact one of my few interest’s is reading, my favorite author is Alice Osemen who created the series heartstopper which consists of both novels and comics. Reading is a great a great comfort to me because it helps tone down my anxiety’s and helps get me distracted from things I don’t want to think about.

As a writer I am more of a write my emotions down in a diary rather than more of a narrative writer, I intend to improve on different types of writing over the semester as there are still many more things I have to learn about when it comes to writing.

We do talk about Bruno

I´m Bruno Rodriguez Gutierrez I am from Guadalajara, Mexico; it is my first year at Brookes Westshore and some things I like to do are soccer, weightlifting and basically every sport. It has been a week since I arrived to Brookes Westshore and I’m really liking it so far. I have many interests but the main thing I do is play soccer. I also like to read, but only books that catch me and are interesting.

I would describe myself as a passive reader because, as mentioned before, I only read books that keep me reading. Sometimes, I leave books without reading them completely because it starts off really good, but it decreases its quality and causes me to stop being interested. I also like to inspire on books and sometimes write my own version.

As a result, I would describe myself as a sponteanous writer because I can write a whole story starting off from only one idea.

We do talk about Erick

Hi my name is Erick and today I am going to talk about my life , I live in México City i love to do sport my favorite sport is the american football I have 2 dogs and 2 cats i love the animals and I like to read I like to do all kinds of sport ,in  Mexico there is not much security that´s why i love to stay in here in Canada , I like to read economics books because I feel that it is something very important that can help me, I don´t really like writing, I like reading much more, but as a writer my opinion is that I´m good, I just got to Brookes but I´m liking it but i have to know a lot more, thanks.

Amelia’s Introduction

My name is Amelia. I was born here in Victoria but my family is from England and as you may notice I have a bit of a British accent. This is my fourth year at Brookes and I like to participate in the schools Track and Field team in the summer. I love being outside in nature and going for long hikes with my family. One of my hobbies is birdwatching, which I started when I was five. Since then I have travelled locally and internationally with my dad finding birds and recording them using a data collecting app called eBird.

I enjoy reading books, especially non fiction adventures and I like a few fiction novels. I prefer to read series because the set takes longer to read than just one book so I enjoy it more. I am currently reading the sixth and final book of a series called The Land of Stories by Chris Colfer which is my favourite series I have read and this is my second time reading it.

I like to do creative writing and short stories either about something real that happened or completely from my imagination. I’m not a huge fan of writing something really long because I tend to loose interest which makes it harder for me to finish unless it’s about something I can choose what to write about that I enjoy.

The Experiences of Blake

Hello, or welcome more formally, (if you happen to be an English teacher). This is the eventful blog of; ‘The Experiences of Blake’. Currently, I am residing in Victoria, BC, Canada. This is my fourth year attending Brookes Westshore. Although I thoroughly enjoy reading, I often find it difficult to get into a series that I have never read before. I tend to have a cycle of books that I read through. I have, however gotten into a new book called ‘Stick and Rudder’ ; a book about the basics of light aircraft. Some of my interests include aviation, downhill skiing, hiking, and Canada as a whole. In terms of my writing, I wrote a handful of short stories over the last two to three years; one of which was entered into a short story competition. I have spent a lot of time in Northern Vancouver Island, as well as Northern British Columbia, particularly in Smithers. Why Smithers? It just so happens that my Dad’s side began there on Malkow Lookout, a popular hiking location for residents of the town; a history lesson if you will. Their farm began on a sizeable piece of land overlooking Hudson Bay Mountain; the local ski hill.

My time spent in Northern Vancouver Island is at Horne Lake during the summer months, as well as Mount Washington during the winter months. Horne Lake is primarily a summer location, with swimming, watersports, and caving. Unfortunately, unpleasant weather just doesn’t make it enjoyable in the winter. Mount Washington is the opposite, as you would expect, being a winter destination for the high averages of snowfall. I downhill ski on the mountain from early December to April, choke on $20 price points for a burger, and enjoy my favourite season. Weather on the mountain can be unpredictable, and changes can happen in a matter of minutes from sun to snow, as with most mountainous regions. Something that really sets this mountain apart from other interior ski hills is the fact that you can see the ocean from the peak, being that it is only about 30 kilometers from the ocean.

My love for aviation has driven me to pursue my career path as a pilot, and I am currently attending the Royal Canadian Air Cadets to help prepare through ground school and drill. On top of my in-person ground school, I have also been doing online ground school and flight simulators to further my understanding of aviation for my Private Pilot’s License (PPL). During the summer of last year, I went on a fly-over of the Bulkley Valley and Babine Mountains region in a Cessna 172 amphibian with Alpine Lakes Air. This flight familiarized me with the basic controls of this aircraft. So you may be asking; what inspired me? If I rewind to about 3 1/2 years ago, on a flight from YVR (Vancouver) to YYD (Smithers), when everyone was disembarking the aircraft, I was so happy to be flying. As I was nearing the front of the aircraft one of the pilots said “Wow you seem to really love flying! Would you like to sit in the cockpit?” My eyes lit up like never before. As I was admiring everything, the pilot continued with “If you want to be a pilot, Air Cadets is your gateway to success.” The way he spoke so highly of the program inspired me start pursuing my dream in aviation. Props to Air Canada Express for the moment!

All About Me

There are a great number of things I could write about myself and my experiences, however I will not bore you with such things and instead start with the basics such as my name and some simples facts about me. My full name is Polina Ulanova, my whole family is from Russia and we decided to move across the world when I was only six years old in 2015. I’ve been attending Brookes Westshore for almost one full year now and lastly my biggest interest in life at the moment is hanging my friends outside of school. Although I still love Brooks Westshore I still greatly miss my friends who by this point have also switched to different schools where we live, which is right outside of Langford in Sooke BC.

Another fact about myself that I believe is greatly in important to know in English class is that I love to read, yet I find it is terribly hard for me to find a book I see any interest in. This has been like this for me for years now, you can even say as long as I can remember. I don’t hate or dislike any genre, any writer in particular, and or even the darkest of topics. Nevertheless I still find at least half of the books I pick up to be awfully boring or not made for the type of person that I am towards novels.

Last but not least if I were to describe myself as a writer I would say, I still have a lot to grow and learning to do from other writers. However I still love to write when I have a topic I’m passionate about and I’m very excited to be writing throughout the next coming up school year with my fellow classmates and teachers even outside of English class.

Serg’s Fascinating Tech

Hello, my name is Serg! I will do my best to best describe me in the 3 paragraphs following this rather short introduction.

I am 14 years old and I go to a wonderful school named Brookes Westshore (I have been there for a year now). I myself was was born in the second largest city in Ukraine, Kharkiv. My biggest interests are as follows: I enjoy spending repugnant hours trying to bring tech back to life (computers, phones, etc.) as well as knowing quite a bit about tech myself: I also enjoy coding as well as updating microcode for the CPU (central processing unit). My dad and I have both interests in Dentistry (my dad works as a Dental technician and I hope to study for a Dentist). With myself growing I find that my level of interest also elevates. It feels like very recently I used to only build cardboard ships and now I have learned the way PC (personal computer) parts interact and cooperate amongst each other. While I enjoy Tech, and Computing greatly, I must not forget anything regarding my personal attributes.

Whenever I find a book which catches my attention, whether by interest or by gradual story-line build up, I don’t hesitate and begin reading it like my life depends on it. Heck, I once read the “Harry Potter and the Philosopher”s Stone” for 2 and a half hours, reading nonstop during dinnertime. It got to a point where I wasn’t allowed to have the book on the table during meals since it has distracted me from communicating to my family (during the 2 and a half hours), functioning like a portal to another world, which, in return, proves to those souls which hate reading that we, ‘lame’ readers, read not only for interest, but for the gradual atmosphere as well as its effectiveness. In total on that day I read around 100 pages which blew my peers minds when I told them regarding my state in progress of the book. Adding on, in 7th grade our class was assigned to read a clever and so far one of the most thrilling books in the world (if you ask me). The book is called ‘Airborne’, (Written by Kenneth Oppel) in which Pirates capture an Airship and a crew member is tasked with saving the whole crew. We were tasked to read it in a month, while I finished it in the first week and half.

Meanwhile I like reading more than writing, I still enjoy to write fancy papers. I have my fair share of excellent essays written by myself. The one I most honour is titled: ‘Tanks and All About Them’. In that paper, I went out and written 4 pages of size 11 font, as well as .25 spacing between rows, describing each and every military machine known to me at the time, which regards all of the tanks from World War 2 and most of their variations (from both Allied and Axis powers). The essay had 1250 words and the teacher just gave me a high mark due to the complexity of the subject (I was 11, in Grade 6, as well as it had some words that I couldn’t fully understand). Others, however, wrote essays on everyday items, such as computers, phones, as well as  their daily life. Unfortunately, this along with the many files stored on the account from the previous school were closed and I couldn’t retrieve the hard work that I spent large portions of valuable time on.

In conclusion, this is everything you will need to comprehend to fully understand myself. I hope this rather short essay has allowed you to learn something new about my personality.

Kind Regards,

Iaroslav Serg Pyrozhok

Everything to need to know about me

My name is Ana, I was born on January 20th 2009, in Spain. I live in a town near Madrid. I don’t have any siblings but I do have a rabbit, called Lucas, and two cats, Cabezón and Morroblanco. I have been dancing since I was 3 and I will continue doing it for as long as I can. This is my first year at Brookes and I’m looking forward improving my English skills, make friendships and get better at socializing. I am good at maths and I love everything that has got something to do with astronomy.

I really like reading but I don’t read as much as I would like to because I don’t have enough time. I prefer stories that progress faster so it’s easier to read and does not feel that tiring. I think sometimes larger books tend to get left for the last book to read and finally never gets to be read so I personally choose thinner books over larger ones.

I write a lot, mostly when I’m feeling down. I am not the kind of person who writes stories or someone’s life, I’m the one who puts their feelings into paper as a way of letting those feelings go. My first language is Spanish, but when I write I usually do it in English. One thing I’d like to get better with is writing so that way it would be easier for me to write down my feelings without needing to think about how something is spelled or how to form a sentence.

Oliver here

Hello my name is Oliver, I’m originally from Montreal but I moved here to Victoria when I was 5 years old. I love to ask questions and make comments and I love everything to do with science or philosophy. I also know a bit of Spanish and can speak French fluently. I’m also a big fan of arts, especially architecture. Additionally I love nature and am a big fan of hiking. In addition I know taekwondo and do sparing regularly.

An avid reader, I love fantasy-adventure as well as some fiction.  I also enjoy other genres but I don’t like it when the storyline progresses to slowly. So mainly adventure. I’ve read and binge-read several series already, so I prefer series that last longer. I also like to read through interesting scientific books and enjoy taking in lots of information about the designated topic.

As a writer I enjoy coming up with new and interesting ideas and love inspiration. However I’m not great (at all) at formatting my ideas or writing in a captivating way (and occasionally just missing grammar). So my writing didn’t get the highest grades last year, however this year will be a new start and I am looking forward to improving my writing skills. I’m also bad at using writing or literature to communicate in an effective way, so I’m also looking forward to improving those skills. In general my favorite parts of writing being able to come up with new ideas and using inspiration in new and interesting ways.

In conclusion, I do look forward to a new start. As well as improving my writing skills drastically and using and gathering inspiration in new and creative ways.

Me, according to myself.

Hi everyone, my name is Theo, and I’m brand new to Brookes. I love music and everything related to it. I listen to many genres, but mainly listen to metal, and love anything that pushes the boundaries of music itself. I love collecting vinyl, CDs, and cassette tapes, and listen to them in my free time. I also enjoy early 20th/19th century cookbooks as they give a great insight into life in the country and time period they were written in.

As a reader, I am interested in many things. I love horror, fantasy, sci-fi, and westerns, mainly, but will read anything that piques my interest. My favorite book of all time has to be Steven King’s The Shining, as it changed the way I viewed literature. I am currently reading Breakfast Of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut, and really enjoy his dry, humorous critique of how our society conducts itself.

As a writer, I don’t enjoy creative writing, but prefer to write reports on various topics. I don’t normally write for fun, but I am getting into it as I enjoy the process. This year I aspire to try and do more creative writing, although I’m not the best at it. I am very excited about all the opportunities I will have for writing this year, and hope to really work on my writing skills.

Jordyns’ introduction.

Hello! I’m Jordyn. Im from the island and have been attending Brookes Westshore for the past day. I’m a sports fan (mostly soccer and baseball.) Yet, fluent in most. I’m passionate with many sports, my dad has taught me almost all the sports in the book. I work at Tim Hortons and have been there for the last 2 months. I can say i’ve learnt a lot of public speaking, and have had many human interactions, and experiences throughout the months. I’m very passionate about working and keeping busy in the days. I’m known for my reading. I enjoy non-fiction books more than fiction, and currently reading The Great Gatsby. I read almost every-night, or chance I get. Most of my reading encourages my writing, and persuades the way I see the world around me. I’ve read all the way from the hunger games to Romeo and Juliet. I can say i’m for sure not limited to categories. I’m a huge fan of writing, it’s a daily occurrence for my nightly routines, sometimes mornings. I’m very passionate about writing and plan to pursue it as my future career as a journalist. In my last school I entered in almost every writing challenge to my age group, and excelled in my grades.

Welcome to the MYP4 English 9 Class Blog

We will use this blog for Independent Reading journal entries, for Personal Writing, and for occasional responses to the literature we study together and to our class discussions and activities.

Comments on this blog must be specific, kind, and helpful. All the writing on this blog should aim to use standard spelling, punctuation, and grammar. This is not Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok!

You will learn a tremendous amount by reading each other’s work. Sometimes you will think, “Ah, that’s really good, I could do that, too.” At other times you will think, “Ah yes, I make that same mistake, but I usually don’t notice it in my own writing.” Or you may think, “Wow, my writing is better than I thought.” Together, we can learn faster and make more progress.

Sample IRJE #2: “We was attacked!”

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a group of English school boys are evacuated by plane from a war zone, but the plane crashes on a remote tropical island, and the only adult with them—the pilot—is killed. Soon after they meet, Ralph and Piggy argue about what happened to the pilot of their airplane, and we see right away that Piggy is more of a thinker than Ralph:

“He must have flown off after he dropped us. He couldn’t land here. Not in a place with wheels.”

“We was attacked!”

“He’ll be back all right.”

The fat boy shook his head.

“When we was coming down I looked through one of them windows. I saw the other part of the plane. There were flames coming out of it.” (p. 8)

Whereas Ralph unthinkingly believes that everything will work out for the best (“’He’ll be back all right’”), Piggy has kept his eyes open during the crash and is brave enough to speak the frightening truth: there are no adults left to take care of them.

Sample IRJE #1: “You reason like a block of cheese.”

In The Viscount of Bragelonne, by Alexander Dumas, the old soldier, d’Artagnan, proposes a business opportunity to Planchet, who was his squire in their younger days but who now owns a prosperous candy shop in Paris. D’Artagnan’s idea is to raise a small army and restore Charles II, rightful King of England, to his throne. Planchet is reluctant to invest without understanding more about d’Artagnan’s plans.

“Since you are proposing a business deal, I have the right to discuss it,” says Planchet.

“Discuss, Planchet; from discussion comes light.”

“Well then, since I have your permission, I would like to point out that in England they have, first of all, a Parliament.”

“Yes. And then?”

“And then, an Army.”

“Good. Anything else?”

“And then, the people themselves.”

“Is that all?”

“The people of England, who consented to the overthrow and execution of the late King, father of Charles II, will never agree to put the son back on the throne.”

“Planchet, my friend” said d’Artagnan, “you reason like a block of cheese.” (p. 417)

In French, the line is more beautiful: “Planchet, mon ami, tu raisonnes comme un fromage.” It made me laugh out loud the first time I read it, and it reminded me of something my French friend Christian said to me years ago when he noticed that I was wearing a new shirt: “Tu es beau comme un camion.” “You are as handsome as a truck.”
