Personal Response to R&J Video – Camille

This movie feels like a knock-off, low-budget, fan-film on Youtube, that was made because the original Netflix series of Romeo and Juliet got cancelled and the fans just needed to see the book (or play) come to life. The acting does not convince me that what I am seeing is real, a lot of problematic things from the script somehow made it into the final cut, the soundtrack is uninspiring, and the ending leaves you feeling like these are the most unintelligent characters you have ever had the displeasure of learning about. The costumes in the film bother me, too. It’s not the sexualized male costumes, but actually just the colour of the costumes. They all look like clowns, but they are supposed to be serious characters that come from well-known families in Verona. Sorry, I’m just not convinced. Is it unfair to blame the script, because the script is actually the entire story? Probably, but that will not stop me. Most of the dialogue is unnecessary, they take a whole stanza/paragraph to say simple things, like when the Prince is telling everyone to get lost and yells at the Capulets and Montagues to stop fighting or the people fighting will be killed. His speech takes up a whole page, and I just summarized it in a short sentence. This movie has themes of pedophelia all throughout (Paris wanting to marry Juliet and commenting on making her a mother even though she is ONLY 13, Romeo being 4 years older than Juliet, etc.). My biggest grievance is the sexism obviously displayed in the whole movie. One scene that stood out to me was the scene where Mercutio and some of his friends are assaulting the Nurse, calling her fat and ugly, and pulling up her skirts and sticking their heads underneath. This is sexual assault, and it shows clearly that Romeo is not a good enough guy to stand up for women when his friends are the ones that are in the wrong. Yeah, he “tried to stop it” by lightly tapping his friends, and basically whispering to them that they should stop. This is obviously not enough to make a difference. This situation paired with the street fighting that Romeo takes part in makes Romeo a redder flag, but apparently red is Juliet’s favourite colour. Also, Juliet got over Romeo killing her cousin WAY too quickly. Would I, personally, see some sense in killing the person that kills your best friend? Yes, but Tybalt is not my cousin and I have no respect or connection to him that makes me upset by his death. Juliet, however, decided that she doesn’t care that her summer-fling turned husband  killed her cousin, and decided to carry on making the wrong decision of staying with Romeo. To conclude my response that is reaching 500 words, I will say that this movie is 1 out of 5 stars. The 1 star is given because Juliet’s actress is very pretty and it made the movie more bearable.
