WW1 Readings Reflection

For me, All Quiet on The Western Front gave me the biggest impression of the war. The part that stood out to me the most was when Paul went back to his hometown. He hoped to feel comfortable and wished to have time like the old days. However, when he returned, he realized that he no longer fit in. His family and the people in his town couldn’t understand him and he was surprised how everyone was living as if nothing was happening. Paul describes “They are different men here, men I cannot properly understand, whom I envy and despise.” This quote shows how the war changed Paul’s view of the world. I found this quote the most touching, because Paul is still very young, and its sad how war changed the way he sees the world. This part made a big impression on me because I thought Paul would be so glad to be back home with his family and friends, but instead he felt like he was in a foreign world. Another part that stood out to me is when Paul changed into his civilian clothes. He felt so light after changing. It made me realize how heavy the clothes and weapons the soldiers had to carry. Overall, this book helped me better understand the weight that war places on soldiers.
