Reflection

The writing which had the biggest impact on me and on my perspective about World War One was definitely “All Quiet on the Western Front” because I have to admit that before the book I thought that soldiers were only violent, cold-blooded, unemotional persons and the book showed me the direct opposite. That they actually are empathetic and actually only humans like we all are, even children you could say. Children who voluteered more out of peer pressure than out of real voluntariness. Children who haven’t really experienced life yet and who would rather be at home than in the trenches even tough they kind of love their comrades. One other big thing the book showed me was how the life of the soldiers looked like, before reading it I didn’t really have an imagination about their life looked like but the book brought me the reality of their daily lifestyle quite close. Also things like when Paul went out for leave, I couldn’t have imagined that this could actually be seen as something bad because of course not only the life of the soldier changes during war but also the “normal” lifes. I would recommend everyone to read this book who doesn’t know that much about WWI because it gives you great insights and shows you a new perspective.
