It was my first time reading and watching Romeo and Juliet. I already knew a few basic ideas about it, because it is so popular. I really enjoyed the film, but there were also a few parts that I had questions about. It was difficult to understand the words they used in this film, because it is old English, but watching the film helped me better understand what was happening in the story. During the film, I was shocked by the deaths of Tybalt and Mercutio because I thought that only Romeo and Juliet died. I also thought the fight scene between Tybalt and Mercutio was surprising because it began pretty playful but became serious at the end. Mercutio’s death was sad, since when he got injured, everyone thought he was acting injured. I didn’t know that Mercutio’s death was the main reason why Romeo and Juliet were separated. Additionally, I was confused by how quickly Romeo changed his mind about who he liked and how he knew it was love. Before meeting Juliet, Romeo liked Rosaline, but right after he saw Juliet, he fell in love with her. This made me curious if Romeo actually deeply loved Juliet. Furthermore, I do not understand why they made Juliet drink the poison before making sure that Romeo received the letter. If they had first told Romeo and then given Juliet the poison, this ending would not have occurred. At the same time, if their story had a happy ending, I do not think Romeo and Juliet would have become this popular. Overall, I enjoyed watching this film. As I mentioned for me, watching the film while reading helped me better understand the story and helped me deeply understand the characters’ situations.
