Romeo and Juliet, probably the most famous, most romantic love story of all time, bla bla bla. Before watching it in English class here I kind of had an idea of what it was about, two families who hate each other, their children fall in love and at the end they kill themselves because they don’t want to live without each other. It never seemed really interesting to me, I stilI tried reading it in German because I thought it had to be good if so many people like it(I didn’t understand a single word and also at that time I didn’t know it was a play and not a normal book which got me really confused), that didn’t change my mind. After watching the whole story for the first time, I can say that I think that in my opinion the plot is completely unrealistic, unromantic, and totally not my dream and I really think that anybody who says that they want to find their “Romeo” has either never actually watched the movie or thinks about “Die Vorstadtkrokodile” (if you know you know but I don’t think any of you will:(). First I don’t believe in love at first sight (attraction yes but love???), second I definitely don’t believe in marriage at 3rd (!!!!) sight, especially not if all you talk about at those two times you see each other before is 1. (at the dinner thingy) that he wants to kiss her 2. (at the balcony) how much they love each other after knowing of each other for about 2-3 hours. I know that we need to consider that Shakespeare wrote that play between 1594 and 1596 and that the world looked a lot different at that time but it is hard to justify talking about 13 year old children being mothers (why would you think children should have children) and getting them married (to a lot older men, Paris was between 20 and 25 years). What could make you think that that was a good idea, even back then. And I know that Mr. MacKnight said that the thing people like about Shakespeare is the language but I don’t even get that part, maybe because I didn’t take enough time to appreciate it or maybe because my English isn’t good enough to understand it but I just don’t think you need to say those (not always but sometimes) stupid things in 4 stanzas if you can say them in 1 normal sentence. A thing that I liked was that it played in Italy because it is amazing but also that is a bit confusing at the same time because imagine somebody in 1597 sitting there not knowing Italy and then they think that you speak English in Italy so they go there and discover that they won’t be able to order ice cream because you didn’t actually speak English in Verona in 1597. I don’t think that Romeo and Juliet passes the Bechdel Test since every conversation between two women is about either Romeo or Paris, but that is just another point on my complaint list. I didn’t even write half of my thought and I didn’t even get to complain about the end but I am over 500 words so goodnight.
