Which of the WWI readings so far has made the biggest impression on you? Bernardo

The reading that had the most impression on me was the documentary Shall Not Grow Old, because it was way more entertaining that the other readings and novels. The fact that it was a documentary visualizes what the book and the poems were trying to describe, such as the soldiers smoking all the time and about some difficulties that they had. With the movie I could understand better not only because of the visual effects but also from what the soldiers were talking during the film, since to make the movie, Peter Jackson had to contract professional people to decipher what the soldiers were trying to say in the original tape.

At the start of the documentary it shows people that are around 16 to 17 years old lying about their age so they could join the army saying that the war would be like “Kids playing with toys for the first time“. Also at the start it shows the soldiers training for the war and that they received a kid and they would keep that the whole time, including heavy leather jackets. Most of these things are said on the other sources as well, however in the document it demonstrates the difficulty of the soldier only eating little portions of food and about the jacket that complicated everything. In general, I preferred the document over the readings because it showed more informations and it helped me to visualize what was happening in the war and how the soldiers reacted to it, like if a friend of a soldier did we know that he was traumatized but not how he stayed and on the movie they try to show how the soldier stayed.
