WW1 Readings Reflection

During this unit I found that the WW1 poetry readings made the biggest impression for me. I found that I learned more details about what it was like in the field and even at home. With the books and other readings we had this unit I found they gave me some background information but with the poetry packet I found that it went more in depth because it was primary sources. I also liked how some of the poems had other poems that were written for each other, and how lots of them were written by women which really shows how they were very involved in the war. On page 21 and 22 there is a poem written by Vera Brittain called Perhaps and on the other page is a poem written by her fiancé called Hédauville. These poems were written for each other while he was fighting. In her poems she talks about not wanting to have moments without him and missing him all the time, and in his poem he talks about how if he dies he wants her to be happy and to remarry and make sure he is a good man. This is one of the poems that was very interesting for me because it shows how much the war tore everyone apart. Also the poem The Song of the Mud on page 17 – 18 was very significant to me because of how detailed the author got and how the author was really able to write in a way that made you picture the poem happening in your head. The last poem that really made me realise that the poem reading packet was more significant for me was on page 19 called In a Soldiers Hospital 1:Pluck. This piece of writing also paints a very good picture of what it was like in a field hospital during this time. All the young men that were there and how they suffered. I found that in the other things we read they were very good but the poems had first hand experience and the writers are very talented in that they can make you imagine what is going on.
