I am currently finishing reading The Wicked King by Holly Black. The quotation that I chose for this takes place when the main character is returned to land (she is kidnapped by the undersea earlier on) and is talking to the High King Cardan for the first time after the kidnapping. This quotation is on page 266 and is said by Cardan to Jude.
“I wasn’t kind, Jude. Not to many people. Not to you. I wasn’t sure if I wanted you or if I wanted you gone from my sight so that I would stop feeling as I did, which made me even more unkind. But when you were gone–truly gone beneath the waves–I hated myself as I never have before.”
I chose this quotation because it shows a more vulnerable side to this character who is normally cocky and arrogant, and I thought that it was interesting to see a more open and honest side to him.
