In the novel “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” written by Stephan Chbosky, Chbosky uses Charlie’s emotions to explore the theme of isolation. Throughout the book, Charlie is mostly trying to understand what’s wrong with him.

I just wish that God or my parents or Sam or my sister or someone would just tell me what’s wrong with me. Just tell me how to be different in a way that makes sense. To make this all go away. And I disappear.

Chbosky, Part 3

This quotation shows how deep Charlies feelings go, and how much he urges to understand why. By listing all his close friends and family he showed how disconnected he is from them no matter how close they are. He talked in short sentences representing how he fills overwhelmed. Chbosky uses this part of the book for the reader to be aware of mental health struggles, and how it’s full of guilt and confusion. Charlie is basically begging to be seen, which make the quote one of the most vulnerable ones in the novel. This quote also represents the theme of supporting and understanding those around you which is one of the most used themes throughout the entire novel.
