IRJE#2 – Beloved

Currently, I’m reading Beloved by Toni Morrison. At this point in the story, Sethe is dealing with the presence of Beloved and the memories of her past. The story focuses on how her past experiences with slavery continue to affect her present life, and the tension between wanting to protect her family and being haunted by her memories is very intense. Reading from Sethe’s perspective makes the story feel very personal, as I see her struggle with guilt and survival.

“124 was spiteful. Full of a baby’s venom.” – p.

This quote stood out to me because it shows how the past can linger and affect the present. It made me reflect on how trauma or difficult experiences can stay with someone, shaping their actions and feelings long after the event itself. I found this quote meaningful  because it shows the idea that memory and pain are not easily forgotten, and it made me think about how people cope with when they feel guilt
