In the book The Magic Misfits by Neil Patrick Harris, Ridley Larson is the unofficial leader of a group called the Magic Misfits comprised of kids who have special talents. Ridley is skilled at transformation magic and inventing things. She also owns a rabbit named Top Hat. Ridley’s life was going downhill and she didn’t know what her future was going to look like. Other kids in the group include the street magician Carter Locke, the escape artist Leila, refined prodigy Theo, and twins Izzy and Olly. Anyway Ridley’s life was going nowhere and she did’t knwo where she was going to end up.
Ridley Larson’s life was a locomotive barrelling toward an unknown destination. The events of the past summer made her feel like she was moving through a dark tunnel. one filled with smoke and the occasional screaming whistle, if she came upon a sharp curve, she feared she might come completely of the tracks. (p. 8)
I like to highlight this section of the book as it shows how lost Ridley really is in her life at that moment. That part of the book highlights the fact that she just doesn’t know how her life was going to turn out. the writer achieved this by using similes like ”a locomotive barrelling toward an unknown destination” or ”like she was moving through a dark tunnel”. He really does a good job of showing how her life is going.
