“PW #1 Mexico independence day celebration”

The 15th of September of 1810 in Guanajuato is the day that Miguel hidalgo did the cry of Dolores, which gave the bravery to the village to fight with the Spanish to gain their liberty.

The plan is to for this Day, so Fernando Miren, Renata, Tamara, Adrian and I are planning a celebration for all the boarding students here in Brookes Westshore.

The plan is to put “El grito de Independencia” that is performed in ” El zocalo” in Mexico City performed by our president Claudia Sheinbaum; which in my opinion is not good, but this is done to celebrate our independence not our president.

We were planning ahead so yesterday we went for a run to exercise a little more and found a Mexican local store, we stayed there like 30 minutes and ended up finding lots of Mexican ingredients to cook, so we decided that Fernando and I are goanna cook esquites and Agua de horchata.

This celebration is important for us because it helps us to remember our roots of where we come from and appreciate everything that our country has gave to us.

emilio introduction

Hi, my name is Emilio. I was born in Mexico City and right now I am 15 years old. I like videogames, social media and terror or humoristic tv shows & movies (going to the cinema). I have a younger sister called Barbara, my mom (Diana) and my dad (Alejandro). My favorite sport is swimming but I haven’t done it for like a few weeks because I just came here to Victoria, so I hope that the school gives us soon the orientation to be able to go to Juan De Fucca to do some sports. I took a cruise in Europa this summer, where I visited a lot of countries such as France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Montenegro. I hope I can learn a lot here, make real friends and in general have fun.

I think that’s it 🙂

andrea introduction

my name is Andrea Gerzso and I’m an exchange student in Brookes!!

I’m from Mexico City and i have a big sister called Natalia, I really enjoy hanging out with my friends and just to have fun. I’m a huge fan of playing soccer but I haven’t trained in a long time because of school.

I’m looking forward to knowing different people from different parts of the world and also try new things.

I’m a huge fan of traveling just like my parents, I’m looking forward to going to Africa for my moms and my birthday. My favorite place I’ve traveled to is berlin, because of all the museums and history of the second world war .

noahs introduction

my name is noah, my favourite colour is red, i like biking, playing videogames, especially fortnite and gta 5,and i love dogs. one cool thing about me is that i can do a great peter griffin impression. a couple things i dislike are sardines, the phone brand OnePlus, and getting a sore throat. i have four family members, my mom, my dad, my little brother, and my dog, if that counts. i enjoy hanging out with friends and walking my dog. my favourite season would have to be summer, because you can do more things in the sun, it gets darker later, and no school. fall is when it gets chilly, winter is nice because of the break but still very cold, and spring is when the snow starts to melt. my favourite subject would probably be i&s (sorry mr. macknight!) i like learning about history and the way people did things in the past. my favourite movie would probably be shrek, not shrek 1, but shrek 2. the dialogue and unique cast of characters kept the momentum from the first movie, and even though the first movie has an iconic beginning with smash mouth’s “All Star”, shrek 2 just has the better plot.

PW#1 Ranking ultra beast pokemon from lowest to highest

#11 Kartana: its a cool pokemon and i like the origami paper thing that can cut meteors, but it just never stood out to me even when i had one during a playthrough of a pokemon rom hack. but a 4x weakness to fire is kinda bad, especially when the defenses suck too, but it has a absurdly high attack at 174 or something like that which is neat, but being slimed by a lighter is not.

#10 Poipole: its a pre-evolution and the only ultra beast that evolves, so obviously its weak. i like the design but the only reason its higher than kartana is cause of the anime, but in the games it kinda sucks.

#9 Buzzwole: i really like buzzwole, but bug-fighting is just a really bad defensive typing, when its defense and attack is in the 100’s, the special defense also isnt good. the design is cool, but its typing just drags it down with a 4x weakness to flying and many other weaknesses. plus there being another bug-fighting ultra beast that is what buzzwole shouldve been.

#8 blacephalon:  the only ultra beast with a signature move, mind blown (150 base power but high recoil) and though it can be good in many situations, especially with its high special attack stat but if the enemy survives a mind blown, they’re likely to KO blacephalon, though i wouldnt know as i never actually used one.

#7 Guzzlord: i really like guzzlords design, but similarly to buzzwole, a high HP tank is good, but dark-dragon being a awful typing a 4x weakness to a very used type being fairy, among plenty of others. there even is another dark-dragon type in hydreigon and roaring moon, but they’re offensive so they can utilize their type way better than guzzlord, who looks strong until you realize a little speck of fairy dust sends it to the shadow realm.

#6 Naganadel: naganadel, the evolution of poipole, its the weakest ultra beast (besides poipole) having a base stat total of 540 while the others have 570, however it has a very good movepool with plenty of setup and coverage options, but i never found success using one as its too slow to move before most of the things that counter it, and when it is faster it cant deal high enough damage to take them out. but it still is a very good special attacker

#5 Pheromosa: this is what i was talking about when there was a better bug-fighting than buzzwole. Pheromosa has very low defenses but it doesnt need that when it outspeeds almost everything and its high special attack AND attack can KO anything too, and since it has equal atk and spatk it can be a mixed attacker running physical attacks alongside special ones, the only downside again is the poor defensive typing but it doesnt suffer as much as buzzwole due to being a offensive mon

#4 Stakataka: this is basically the best trick room mon you could have, with a low 13 speed (trick room reverses speed stats) and a VERY high 211 defense and good attack too, it can use 150 base power gyro balls but despite being a defensive mon it has 3 weaknesses which isnt bad until you realize two of them are 4x, fighting and ground. but besides those nothing can hurt it.

#3 Xurkitree: Xurkitree has one of the highest special attacks in the game at 176 or something like that, and when you put a choice scarf on it (boosts speed 1.5x but only lets you use one move) then it can sweep many things, it also gets the busted move tail glow that raises your special attack by +3 which is 2.5x. and being a pure electric type it has only one weakness being ground

#2 Nihilego: Nihilego is a really good UB for it can use meteor beam, and can utilize its beast boost ability to raise special attack or speed depending on which is higher, it gets a bunch of good status moves too if you want to use it for support.

#1 Celesteela: Steel-flying is just a amazing defensive type, with many resistances and only 2 weaknesses, electric and fire. it can also similar to pheromosa be a mixed attacker, except celesteela has very good defenses and hp too, so it can take hits and retaliate with even harder ones. it also gets good grass type support in leech seed, and growth. it can also use heavy slam as its tied for the heaviest pokemon in the game.

I would also like to start playing basketball or maybe write a novella this year, but I am not sure what it would be about.

Introduction

Hi my name is Clara and I am 14 years old. I was born in Korea and moved when I was about 6 years old. I have one sister who is in grade 7 right now, and no brothers. I can speak Korean, English and French and I’m currently learning Italian. my favourite sport is volley ball but I do also like golf a lot. I’ve played volleyball for 2 years, and I’ve played on comp and rec teams. my favourite time of the year is august, as that is the only time when I will actually be able to see my family from Korea.

outside of school, I like to hang out with my friends, go to the gym, go shopping, go on Starbucks runs with my neighbour/ best friend or attempt to learn how to play basketball with one of my family friends. my favourite thing to learn about is cultures, because I find it very fascinating to learn about how people around the world live in very different yet similar lives. Another thing I do is tutor kids in math. I have learned a lot while I’ve done this and I think that my patience and under standing has grown a lot since I’ve started.

Lillian’s Introduction

My name is Lillian Grace Mara, and I am 14 years old. This year will be my 5th year at Brookes Westshore.

One of my favourite things to do is ski. I started skiing when I was 10, and now it has become one of my favourite activities and parts of my life.

I love skiing with my dad; he is really supportive and helps me learn new things. He always pushes me to try things outside my comfort zone, which allows me to reach my full potential. This past summer, I also started playing golf. At first, golf was a little intimidating, but now, as I continue to play and grow, it has gotten a little less scary. As I am continuing to practice the sport, playing it has taught me patience and focus.

Another thing that I really enjoy is volunteering in the childcare department at Westshore Parks and Recreation. Volunteering has taught many things; these include, how to be patient and responsible with young children, and it has really helped me understand what a real job is like. Through this process, I’ve also learned a lot about being supportive of young children, as they often look up to older role models, such as myself. Throughout my whole experience, I have completed about 140 hours of service.

I lived in Comox BC for the majority of my life, and moved to Victoria three months ago. I have a brother named Fred who also goes to Brookes, he is in grade eleven. The class I look forward to having the most this school year is INS, because I am fascinated with history and acquiring knowledge of historical events. The class I am most worried about is Design class, as I struggle with it.

Penelope’s Introduction

My name is Penelope and I am a 14 year old student at Brookes Westshore, I have been at Brookes since grade 6!

What I like to do in my free time is playing sports! I play hockey for the U15A Reign team and softball for the U15B Lakehill team. Other than hockey and softball, I also enjoy running track/cross country and playing volleyball! Sports have given me opportunities to meet new people, try my hardest and travel to new places! I enjoy sports so much because it allows me to push myself both physically and mentally, which always gives me a sense of accomplishment.

Right now, I am learning to step out of my comfort zone in places other than sports, like with school. This year I hope to become a more confident public speaker, either participating more in class discussions or asking more questions. Hopefully by the end of the year I can look back and agree that I have improved my public speaking!

Hedi introduction

My name is Hedi Ben Tekaya and I am 14 years old. I was born in Montreal and moved here when I was about 6 years old.

One thing about me is that I really like sports. My favorite sport is soccer. I started playing the sport since I was 2 in Montreal. When I moved to Victoria I continued to play the wonderful sport. Now I play soccer but I also started playing golf. About 3-4 years ago my dad brought me to the driving range and taught me how to golf. I have kept playing ever since. Some of the past sports that I have done are swimming and karate but currently I only play soccer and golf.

Something else that I enjoy is travelling. My family travels quite a bit and I really like discovering new countries and cities. Some of my favorite countries that I have visited are Thailand, Portugal and Dominican Republic. I have been to other places but those were probably my favorites.

A fun fact about me is that I am Tunisian. Tunisia is a small country in the north of Africa. My mom and my dad were born and raised there. My family and I travel there quite often because pretty much all my family lives there. Tunisia is also one of my favourite places to travel to.

Kobe’s Introduction

My name is Kobe, and one of the biggest parts of my life is basketball. I not only play for fun but also as a way to calm myself down when I’m stressed. Basketball has also given me the opportunity to meet others with the same passion and discipline as me all throughout North America.

In my free time,  I also enjoy doing architecture because it allows me to combine my design side with my imagination. I spend a lot of my free time working out, which gives me a huge sense of accomplishment on a daily basis but also allows me to clear my mind of everything and focus on the present.

On a more personal side, my favourite meal is steak with mashed potatoes, with a strawberry milkshake on the side. My favourite colour is spindrift, which is a light shade of teal and reminds me of the calm Caribbean ocean every time I see it. At home, I have a cat and four horses, and I used to have 4 chickens, which sadly all got eaten by a bear. My dream vacation would probably be a quiet island on the Pacific like Fiji, where I can eat tropical fruits and lay on the warm sandy beaches all day.

Welcome to the MYP4 English 9 Class Blog!

We will use this blog for Independent Reading journal entries, for Personal Writing, and for occasional responses to the literature we study together and to our class discussions and activities. Most of the writing you do on this blog is part of what I call “piano practice”: the ungraded work that improves your skills and produces better results on your assessments.

This is not Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or TikTok. You need to edit and proofread your writing. You need to use standard English and follow the conventions of spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Comments on this blog must be specific, kind, and helpful.

You will learn a tremendous amount by reading each other’s work. Sometimes you will think, “Ah, that’s really good, I could do that, too.” At other times you will think, “Ah yes, I make that same mistake, but I usually don’t notice it in my own writing.” Or you may think, “Wow, my writing is better than I thought.” Together, we can learn faster and make more progress.

Sample Student’s IRJE: “The Perks of Being a Wallflower”

This IRJE was submitted by an MYP5 student during the 2024-25 school year.

Stephen Chbosky’s The Perks of Being a Wallflower is a beloved novel that was written in 1999 and turned into a movie in 2012. The story follows Charlie, a shy and introverted high school freshman, as he struggles with friendships, love and past trauma in his everyday life. It is written in the form of letters which Charlie sends to an anonymous recipient, which gives the reader a deep look into his personal thoughts, emotions and experiences. I really enjoyed this concept because it made the story seem even more personal and as somebody that writes a diary, also very relatable. As he befriends two extroverted seniors, Patrick and Sam, he is introduced to music, books, and begins to feel as if he “belongs” again. The misery slowly starts to dissapear from his daily life, because he finally found friends that loved and cared for him. However, as he begins to heal from past traumas (which are quite unclear to the reader for a while), he also faces a lot of emotional breakdowns and struggles with mental health. Overall the book is quite an emotional rollercoaster and touches on a lot of relatable topics such as self-discovery, love, loss, friendships, and in my opinion – how important it is to truly live in the moment. Towards the end of the story, one of Charlie’s most important realizations comes when he finds peace and understanding, which helps him heal from his past traumas. He finally seems to grasp the reason behind his story and the stories of everybody else and decides, it is best to focus on your own journey and life and stop getting lost in “what if” questions about the past.

So, I guess we are who we are for a lot of reasons. And maybe we’ll never know most of them. But even if we don’t have the power to choose where we came from, we can still choose where we go from there. We can still do things. And we try to feel okay about them. I think that if I ever have kids, and they are upset, I won’t tell them that people are starving in China or anything like that because it wouldn’t change the fact they were upset. And even if somebody else has it much worse, that doesn’t really change the fact that you have what you have. Good and bad. Just like what my sister said when I had been in the hospital for a while. She said that she was really worried about going to college, and considering what I was going through, she felt really dumb about it. But I don’t know why she would feel dumb. I’d be worried, too. And really, I don’t think I have it any better or worse than she does. I don’t know. It’s just different. Maybe it’s good to put things in perspective, but sometimes, I think that the only perspective is to really be there. Like Sam said. Because it’s okay to feel things. And be who you are about them. (pp. 210-211)

This passage really stood out to me and I found myself thinking about its message for quite a while. Since it’s at the end of the story, Charlie finally acknowledges and learns that while our past shapes us, we still have the power to decide how we move forward. I completely agree with this. I believe that whatever happened in your past doesn’t define you, and that everybody is capable of growing past their traumas and experiences, into a new person. After struggling with his past traumas throughout his whole life, Charlie finally meets people that love him for who he is and he realizes that he’s so much more than what has happened to him. His mind doesn’t occupy itself with questions such as “What could’ve happened…?” or “What could I have done differently…?”, instead he’s focused on living in the moment and growing into the person he wants to become. He also realizes that pain and struggles are personal – just because someone else may have a “worse” situation doesn’t mean our own problems aren’t valid. On the contrary, even people in “better” situations might not be doing that much better. His sister feels guilty for worrying about colleges while Charlie is dealing with serious mental health issues, but Charlie reassures her that both struggles matter. Instead of dismissing feelings by comparing them to others, Charlie suggest that the best way to deal with emotions is to fully experience them. This seems to be the key message in the book: showing that personal growth comes from embracing your emotions rather than suppressing them. Through Charlie’s journey, the novel reminds us that life is filled with both joy and hardship and the most important thing we can do is to be present, acknowledge our feelings and move forward in a way that feels right for us.

Sample Student IRJE: “Beyond the Trees,” by Adam Shoalts

This IRJE was submitted by an MYP5 student during the 2024-25 school year.

Beyond the Trees is a nonfiction story Adam Shoalts tells of his journey alone across Canada’s arctic. He wrote it after the documentary that was made which tells the same story which I watched before reading the book. I discovered that he had written books about his adventures after watching the documentary, so I decided to get his most famous book and give it a read. After finishing it, I have concluded that it is one of my favourite books I have read. I found it very captivating, interesting, and full of adventure. Some parts even made me chuckle. The story goes through his mission of travelling on foot and canoe across Canada’s arctic. He starts in Whitehorse, Yukon, and finishes at Baker Lake, Nunavut. It took him nearly 4 months to complete. He weaved through ice floes, faced bears and muskox, and portaged across rough terrain. As the title suggests, he is above treeline, in the arctic tundra. Parts of his journey actually crosses north of the arctic circle line. With little human interaction throughout his journey, he keeps himself company by talking to his canoe and the amazing wildlife. Some of which had never seen a human being. There were many hard times such as inclement winds, treacherous terrain, and ice blocks. I came across the following quotation in the book which is an example of how he overcomes difficult times.

My pants and socks were drenched, but there wasn’t time to dry things out. I just wrung out the socks, put them back on, and kept going. Discouraging as having your waders flood with frigid waters can be, I always found that there was some little thing to cheer me up: the sight of robins hopping along the banks, or a lone wolf wandering the shoreline, or an eagle soaring overhead. Sometimes it’s the little things that make all the difference. (pp. 201-202)

I agree. Sometimes it is “the little things that make all the difference.” I found this passage meaningful because it highlights his perseverance and ability to enjoy the little things, that are often overlooked, by changing his point of view. Instead of focusing on the negative, like his soaked clothes, he chooses to focus on the positives by finding joy in the small things and natural world around him. This shows great mental strength, and I think everyone should try more to find things to be grateful about, even if they’re small. It’s our outlook on life and the situation that shapes our experience more than the circumstance itself.

Sample Student’s IRJE: “Ishmael,” by Daniel Quinn

This IRJE was submitted by an MYP5 student during the 2024-25 school year.

Ishmael is a philosophical novel created by Daniel Quinn, which dives into the ideas of how culture influenced modern civilization through evolution, and it is done through the use of the narrator talking to a telepathic gorilla, whose name is Ishmael. Most of the book is structured through conversation, similar to Socratic literature. I found the way Socratic literature is structured has drawn my attention to the book more, and so far, Ishmael has set quite a good precedent for this type of literature. It is a good concept, which I would like to see more in books. Ishmael has many themes, the main themes of the book are ethics, sustainability, and mythology.

“Again…. Our policy is: Every square foot of this planet belongs to us, so if we put it all under cultivation, then all our competitors are just plain out of luck and will have to become extinct. Our policy is to deny our competitors access to all the food in the world, and that’s something no other species does.”

“Bees will deny you access to what’s inside their hive in the apple tree, but they won’t deny you access to the apples.” (p. 134)

This quotation highlights how humans are inherently different from other species, and rather than taking what they need, they take all of it. After this is highlighted in the first part of this quotation, we then get a metaphor about bees. This metaphor in it’s literal meaning, means: Other species will not allow you to take what they require to survive, but they will allow you to take what they do not. By providing an example of humans, compared to an example of other species, this quotation brings to light the contrast in behavior between humans and other species; which reinforces one of the main themes in the book, being: “The world was made for humans.”

Sample IRJE #3: block quotation without dialogue

Gordon Bowker’s James Joyce: A Biography describes a man who, though he may have been a great writer, was a terrible husband and father. In 1907 Joyce is 25 years old. He is living in Rome on a negligible salary as a bank clerk, supplemented by funds borrowed from his brother. He has a young son, and his wife is pregnant. He is constantly eluding creditors, falling behind in his rent, and moving his family from one shabby apartment to another. He decides to leave Rome, and gives notice to his employer. On his last day of work,

he drew a month’s salary (250 lire) at the bank and went on a farewell spree—a drunken adieu to the Eternal City, which he had come to consider ‘vulgar’ and ‘whorish.’ When [he was] suitably drunk, two congenial bar-flies took him to a backstreet and relieved him of his bulging wallet. He returned home penniless and completely soaked from an evening downpour. (p. 165)

Many have questioned the ethics of enjoying art created by people who have been misogynists, rapists, racists, or fascists, for example. It seems difficult to reconcile beautiful art with such ugly behaviour. In Joyce’s case, such questions have been asked, but in this instance the behaviour is not only bad, but stupid—and this raises a slightly different question. How is it possible for someone like Joyce—who read, wrote, and spoke several languages fluently, and whose work, whatever you think of it, is undeniably brilliant—how is it possible for such an obviously intelligent man to make such stupid choices? If intelligence did not save Joyce from making stupid choices, what about us? What can save us from making stupid choices?

Sample IRJE #2: “We was attacked!”

In William Golding’s Lord of the Flies, a group of English school boys are evacuated by plane from a war zone, but the plane crashes on a remote tropical island, and the only adult with them—the pilot—is killed. Soon after they meet, Ralph and Piggy argue about what happened to the pilot of their airplane, and we see right away that Piggy is more of a thinker than Ralph:

“He must have flown off after he dropped us. He couldn’t land here. Not in a place with wheels.”

“We was attacked!”

“He’ll be back all right.”

The fat boy shook his head.

“When we was coming down I looked through one of them windows. I saw the other part of the plane. There were flames coming out of it.” (p. 8)

Whereas Ralph unthinkingly believes that everything will work out for the best (“’He’ll be back all right’”), Piggy has kept his eyes open during the crash and is brave enough to speak the frightening truth: there are no adults left to take care of them.

Sample IRJE #1: “You reason like a block of cheese.”

In The Viscount of Bragelonne, by Alexander Dumas, the old soldier, d’Artagnan, proposes a business opportunity to Planchet, who was his squire in their younger days but who now owns a prosperous candy shop in Paris. D’Artagnan’s idea is to raise a small army and restore Charles II, rightful King of England, to his throne. Planchet is reluctant to invest without understanding more about d’Artagnan’s plans.

“Since you are proposing a business deal, I have the right to discuss it,” says Planchet.

“Discuss, Planchet; from discussion comes light.”

“Well then, since I have your permission, I would like to point out that in England they have, first of all, a Parliament.”

“Yes. And then?”

“And then, an Army.”

“Good. Anything else?”

“And then, the people themselves.”

“Is that all?”

“The people of England, who consented to the overthrow and execution of the late King, father of Charles II, will never agree to put the son back on the throne.”

“Planchet, my friend” said d’Artagnan, “you reason like a block of cheese.” (p. 417)

In French, the line is more beautiful: “Planchet, mon ami, tu raisonnes comme un fromage.” It made me laugh out loud the first time I read it, and it reminded me of something my French friend Christian said to me years ago when he noticed that I was wearing a new shirt: “Tu es beau comme un camion.” “You are as handsome as a truck.”
