{"id":133,"date":"2012-04-20T11:37:31","date_gmt":"2012-04-20T03:37:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.goodhabitsgoodstudents.com\/blog\/?p=133"},"modified":"2012-04-20T11:41:00","modified_gmt":"2012-04-20T03:41:00","slug":"the-value-of-reading","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ericmacknight.com\/goodhabits\/2012\/04\/20\/the-value-of-reading\/","title":{"rendered":"The Value of Reading"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a title=\"http:\/\/www.goodhabitsgoodstudents.com\/blog\/?p=47\" href=\"http:\/\/www.goodhabitsgoodstudents.com\/blog\/?p=47\">&#8220;Read every day!&#8221;<\/a> is one of the most important good habits that I urge students to practice in <a title=\"http:\/\/www.goodhabitsgoodstudents.com\/blog\/?page_id=30\" href=\"http:\/\/www.goodhabitsgoodstudents.com\/blog\/?page_id=30\">Good Habits, Good Students<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Two items recently came to my attention that add to the evidence of reading&#8217;s benefits.<\/p>\n<p>First, via <a title=\"Larry Ferlazzo\" href=\"http:\/\/larryferlazzo.edublogs.org\/\">Larry Ferlazzo<\/a>, this study showing that reading actually makes our brains bigger:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Reading Grows Your Brain\" href=\"http:\/\/larryferlazzo.edublogs.org\/2012\/04\/03\/study-reading-for-pleasure-makes-your-brain-grow-literally\/#.T3tdXCYzGi0.facebook\">Reading For Pleasure Makes Your Brain Grow (Literally)<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Second, a study from Oxford University has concluded that among a long list of activities by 16-year-olds, reading is the only one that can be shown to result in higher educational attainment and better jobs when those teenagers leave school:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a title=\"Reading at 16 linked to better job prospects\" href=\"http:\/\/www.ox.ac.uk\/media\/news_stories\/2011\/110804.html\">Reading at 16 linked to better job prospects<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In addition, of course, reading enriches your life, whoever you are and whatever you do.<\/p>\n<p>Conclusion? &#8220;Read every day!&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Read every day!&#8221; is one of the most important good habits that I urge students to practice in Good Habits, Good Students.
