I\u2019d never actually read or watched Romeo and Juliet<\/em>. It was one of those stories everybody just knows about. But I\u2019d never gotten around to it, and it was nice to finally see what all the hype was about. I think overall the movie does a good job of paying homage to Shakespeare\u2019s original Romeo and Juliet<\/em>. The movie really helped me get a more in-depth grasp of what the story actually was rather than the vague forbidden lovers summary. It fleshed out the story of Romeo and Juliet really well for me. I liked the dialogue, which isn\u2019t in our modern-day English at all, and it made it feel like the movie was really trying to stay true to the original play. Even though the dialogue felt overly stretched out at times, like in the scene when the Montagues decided to crash the Capulets party, I felt as if all that was unnecessary. Aside from that, I really liked the setting. I\u2019m not sure how historically accurate it was, but it looked very believable for the time period and made it feel as if you were really there. I can’t really say the same for the costume design since, even though we were told it would be revealing and sexualized for what’s meant to also be historical clothing, both the girls and guys clothes made me feel a bit uncomfortable at times. Especially with the treatment of the real-life actors who played Romeo and Juliet (who were both minors at the time of playing them), it made both the nudity scene and the balcony scene very disturbing, in my opinion. But the actors did an amazing job nevertheless. My favourite scene was surprisingly the scene where Juliet and her father are arguing. I really loved the camera work that dramatizes Juliet as she realizes she’s all alone and has nobody. Overall, I would recommend this movie (with caution) to someone who hasn\u2019t read the play or watched any adaptations before, because it gives a nice intro to the story while still staying close to Shakespeares original work.<\/p>\n
