What is the stock market?<\/p>\n
So for the past couple of months I have been listening to my dad and younger brother talk about the stock market, and how this company dipped, this one is a private company, etc. But what does that mean? I did some digging and here’s what I found on Wikipedia: (A\u00a0stock market<\/b>, equity market<\/b>, or share market <\/b>is the aggregation of buyers and sellers of stocks (also called shares), which represent ownership claims on businesses.<\/em>) When I read this, I was still confused. I read a couple books over the long weekend and here’s what I myself think of when the word stock market is brought up. I think of a store, and the store is made up of tiny pieces called shares. Each share is worth a certain amount of money. Owning a stock is like owning a tiny piece of this hypothetical store. I f your company does well, your share, or stock becomes worth more money. (yay) However, if the company does badly it becomes less valuable, meaning you lose money (awww) People buy and sell these stocks for money or in hopes of a business doing well, so they can make money. Now, when I mentioned private companies earlier, what did I mean? well, A private ownership is a company owned by a small group of people, like family or investors. and you can’t buy any stocks from this company because it is basically closed to the public, meaning OFF LIMITS. A public ownership is a company that runs the opposite. Many people can own this company through shares or stocks, meaning anyone can invest in the company. Now, as I was saying in the beginning, companies can dip, or become higher in (key word) value. When a lot of people buy stocks in a company, they are basically hoping that the company value will go up, meaning the stock is worth more in the future, so that they can sell it for a lot. When you sell a stock, It’s like cashing in that money. people do this either because the company is doing badly and the share isn’t worth anything, meaning they lose money, or just because they want the money from the stock. I hope this makes sense to anyone reading. You are now educated in the basics of the stock market!
