It felt very real and human because he wrote like a normal soldier, not like a hero or a writer. He just described what he lived through, and that honesty really touched me.

One part that I will never forget is when Barthas and his friend were dying of thirst, but they couldn’t drink the water in the trench because it was mixed with mud and the bodies of dead soldiers. That image shocked me. It made me think about how terrible the soldiers’ lives were, and how even simple things like water could become disgusting and dangerous.

Another part that stayed in my mind was when the Germans attacked with flamethrowers. Barthas describes the trench full of fire, smoke, and people burning. I could imagine the fear and confusion. It was horrible, but also very human. What I liked most is that, even in this chaos, Barthas helped a wounded friend by tying his scarf around his arm to stop the bleeding. That small action shows kindness and courage in the middle of horror.

This reading impressed me because it doesn’t show war as something heroic. It shows the suffering, fear, and exhaustion of ordinary men. Barthas made me understand that war is not about glory or victory, but about survival and humanity.

The World War I reading that impressed me the most was Barthas’s account of life in the trenches.
