Anne Frank IRJE #1

Anne Frank’s diary was a story like no other. Just after WWII, not many people had the knowledge of all the atrocities Hitler had committed against the Jews. The holocaust was a well-kept secret for a while and was first viewed as a conspiracy, but when the evidence got out and Auschwitz was further examined, people’s opinions started to quickly change. People began to realize the truth, and a book none other than Anne Frank’s diary worked towards a new point of view which could be seen by many people in the world. During the book, I felt a special connection with Anne Frank. Her point of view on many things such as relationships and families weren’t that unfamiliar to me. In the beginning of the book, Anne was exited when she got her first diary for Christmas. She felt like she didn’t have any real friends, so she decided to treat her diary like if it were one of her close friends and even proceeded to name it “Kitty.”

Hence, this diary. In order to enhance my mind’s eye, the picture of the friend for whom I have waited so long, I don’t want to set down a series of bald facts in a diary like most people do, but I want this diary itself to be my friend, and I shall call my friend Kitty. No one will grasp what I’m talking about if I begin my letters to Kitty just out of the blue, so, albeit unwillingly, I will start by sketching in brief the story of my life.
